Picked this up today, pearline I presume but the reg number is really high, 96945 which puts it in the late 20th century ? repro ??

That number is low; it's only five figures not the six you are thinking it is. Is it actually marked? It's the number given in the Davidson book but I can only find it under an image. However, Jenny Thompson gives it as 31 March 1888
