Ariel Bowl? Scandinavian? - ID = Hadeland, Willy Johansson
« on: April 17, 2022, 12:38:38 AM »
Hello everyone.
Been a while since I have posted here, but found this little bowl along with my other glass and saw it was signed.
Looks like it is an Ariel design, with very tiny signature.
Any thoughts on the designer would be appreciated.
Thank you
Javier

I should have read your post before looking it up to get the correct spellings, Michael.  ;D
Is this Ariel though, or air trap?  ???

By air trap do you mean where the indents are made by pressing the hot glass into a mould, rather than cooling and sandblasting ? If so I’d suggest air trap, as more efficient.
You can find some other similar Hadeland bits here: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/gt1358/hadeland/

 ;D I think so, Gareth.
To me, Ariel is when a piece has been cut to create an image or pattern, recased and reblown to soften the lines of the resulting bubbles.
This looks more as if the base shape has been indented while still hot, then recased. It wouldn't neccessarily have been a mould used - a tool could be.
I do see the same "ginger jar" shaped piece in your pinterest link as is in the museum link above.
That looks cut, not moulded or otherwise hot shaped.

It's a beautiful bowl.

I'd forgotten what the Ariel technique was and also remember ' Graal ' so I looked them up.

This explanation came up for both techniques.  Is it a correct description?

Sounds good.
I've attached a couple of pics of blanks (for Ravenna, but the technique is the same).
First is after sandblasting, second has been filled and reheated, ready to be made into a bowl.

This is weird as it also has the mark for his father Wilhelm j.w.j it's model number is 2001 as shown in the 1954 catalogue.

Is it possible it was a joint piece of work?
