Wonderful old flagon /jar !
« on: June 30, 2022, 02:39:38 PM »
I found this jar for £10 recently and love it .It’s done some work that’s for sure with scratches and base wear like I haven’t seen before, probably on and off a shelf regularly. It’s 15” tall with an old cork stopper but I’m not sure that’s originalThe base is well kicked up with a large broken pontil. It has measurement lines on it and a scratched in 320g ,maybe meaning grains ???Any thoughts on the age of this piece ?..I’ll enjoy researching this one but I thought you may be interested aswell .Thanks.

Funny how old Utilitarian stuff can be so nice init think
it looks a bit like you might find in a LAB or Pharmacy
setting seems a little large for home but houses were a
lot larger when this was likely made, certainly Victorian era..
Looks like the old Stoneware bottles a bit maybe a
lighter material was required for a dextrous task as i
think you eluded too looks a lovely thing :)

Yup agree , they changed measurements about 1826 because they had so many for different goods,I’m not sure if it was for liquid or crystals ??.The broken pontil and kicked up base would make me think pretty old for a lot of glass, but this type of piece I’m not sure ?

I should also add it looks pretty flat in the photos but there are a lot of tooling marks especially the top third .

Up to the 320g mark the jar is divided into 4 marked section and one section takes 14 Gill ..3.5 pints.I don’t think it’s a gill mark .?…

Oops, remeasured this morning , each line is 80 fluid oz..4 pints …so 4 lines and you have your 320 , it must be the apothecary sign for oz.
