Cobalt blue cased vase - Nuutajarvi?
« on: September 07, 2022, 02:54:50 PM »
Hi all.

I have this vase, approx. 10" high x 4" wide, and I have found a single reference for it online, here:

https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/decorative-objects/vases-vessels/vases/mid-century-modern-cobalt-glass-scandinavian-glass-vase-nuutajarvi-early-1970s/id-f_17059811/

where it is attributed as "Nuutajarvi Early 1970s". I am dubious about accepting single sources for attribution, and am wondering if anyone here can confirm this (or otherwise) for me please? Any further info would be a welcome bonus  :)

TIA

Steve

Is the pontil mark polished?

Possibly Smalandshyttan but not sure about the shape of your vase.

John

Oh and that is an otherwise for sure...

Hi John.

No, not polished, but not matt either... hopefully this pic shows it better than I can describe:

I don't know who made it but take everything on First Dibs with a bucket of salt

First Dibs is a contradiction, it has listings that are fabulous and others that are frankly bordering on criminal. It can be a site for people with no intelligence but with excessive amounts of money to blow. Some sellers there exhibit gross greed and dishonesty. Two examples that demonstrate this, firstly some Oiva Toikka vases, if priced for the pair probably about right:
https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/decorative-objects/vases-vessels/vases/oiva-toikka-bambu-coloured-glass-vases-nuutajarvi-1960s/id-f_28674722/
then comes the squalor, a modern Chinese produced vase worth buttons, priced in the hundreds:
https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/decorative-objects/vases-vessels/vases/1970s-mid-century-modern-murano-glass-italian-colorful-vase/id-f_26598512/

Rant over, back to the vase in question, the form worries me, it lacks grace and I suspect it is contemporary.

Thanks John.

I'm a complete novice in this field, and so far, it's turning out to be a minefield!

Great to get some proper, considered opinions, from this site  :)

I've been watching this. The vase in question just doesn't say Nuutajaarvi to me.
It lacks the "something really superior" that Nuutajaarvi normally sings.  :-\
