Notches on tableware stems
« on: September 09, 2022, 11:29:49 AM »
I came across this celery recently, which has notches on the stem. Although I have seen stemware like this, I have not found notches on general tableware, typically it's a mark of quality.

And this is a quality cut and moulded celery, it has a high density value of 3.14g/cc which is not a precise fit for my charts and might indicate a lesser known factory.

I am struggling with the attribution. The repeating star pattern matches an 1865 Percival Vickers registration, but the density does not.
Burtles Tate sometimes used notches on pressed tableware stems in the early 1870s to hide the mould lines - this piece is not pressed though.

I suspect it is 1870s due to the pattern and density, foot is quite worn.

Bit of a mystery, any thoughts on this one?
Or is anyone aware of notches applied to other tableware pieces?

Hi Neil, I believe Brockwitz hammonia 1905 had notched stems, might be worth looking at some old Brockwitz catalogues they also had patterns with imitation cut stars.
Thanks Mike
