Sowerby Aesthetic Green Plate
« on: October 07, 2022, 02:21:45 PM »
This 21cm. plate is in the rarer "aesthetic green" colour. I can't actually find this design in the Sowerby catalogues and it's not marked but it is by them. The colour is darker than the photos show.

 ;D Is it Uranium?
Even is it is a bit darker in reality, it is rather lurid.  8)
(Not an insult, I like weird greens.)

We had a house with one of those suites, I prefer the colour of aesthetic green.

Green and yellow plates turn up from time to time. Aesthetic yellow reacts to UV light.
Purple malachite plates are seen often but the  green and blue malachite versions are very rare, I have only ever see one of each colour.
Bought the blue one, should have bought the green one.

Thanks Mike, I'll keep an eye out for the other colours, especially the yellow one. I bought this one in an antiques arcade and the dealer wasn't sure it was Sowerby, so it was very reasonable  ;D

A little story.
1986, I was looking for glass in Southsea/Portsmouth area. Through the window of a junk shop I thought I could see the edge of a yellow plate in a pile of other plates at the back of the shop.
Unfortunately the shop was closed so back to Newbury, 60miles away. Two days later I drove back to Portsmouth hoping the shop would be open, luckily it was, £3.50 for a perfect Giallo plate.
Pre-internet, pre-Ebay, collecting back then you had to put in the miles. I still have the plate.

A nice collection. I often used to do that journey to go sea fishing, it's not much fun nowadays though.
