blue & yellow stripe vase. Maltese? Any ideas please?
« on: October 16, 2022, 11:06:56 PM »
Picked this piece up but despite researching, I can't find one anywhere. I have a feeling that it could be Maltese. There is no signature but the base has a rough pontil, not unlike the type found on Alum Bay JIP vases. Yellow with a blue band swirl. Height is just under 6 inches. Anyone have an idea who it was made by please? Thank you for any input.

:) I can't see the texture in the yellow and the blue is not a blue that looks quite right for anything early Maltese, although now they buy in colours and have expanded where they get glass made (Mdina sells Indian bead bracelets as Mdina) so I can't speak for recent work. But the rough pontil mark suggests elsewhere too.
It looks a fairly well-made thing.  :)

I am unforunately unable to offer any other suggestions. ???

There are also pink and white versions of this spiral range to be found, I have seen bowls and vases but sorry not a clue who made them.

Thank you both for your input. The nearest thing I found when researching were vases that had the same shape but I couldn't find one with the same colours or indeed any other colours or pattern. Malta did the same shape but I ruled out Mdina as the base is not Mdina. I have seen other pieces in the same design too and I am sure that a few years back, I had a similar piece but I just can't remember anything about it. It could be one of those English studio pieces, based at an old farm with units selling candles and that sort of thing...where you have a cuppa and a slice of Victoria sponge that costs £12!!! It is indeed, a well made item...there are a few tiny bubbles, here and there but it does have quality. The search continues.

While it is a kind of later (mid-'70s) Mdina shape, it looks more finely blown than their output and the flare is much wider.
A good victoria sponge is indeed a rare and expensive thing to find.  ;D
You've got me dribbling, thinking about the fabby cafe in a local farm shop up here. ::)

I don't know if this is relevant, under Kralik A-M, "candy cane" pattern.
