Authentic Daum? Small vase
« on: April 01, 2023, 03:44:17 PM »
This little vase was a last minute buy/find as a nice and unusual Souvenir on the last day of a short holdiay in Southern France last year.
The seller did look it over before naming the price and remarked that it didn't have a signature.
However he found one after the trip on the side of the vase. It's the same color as the background and can be missed on a quick glance.

It's 140mm high and weighs 95g.
The base is flat, no pontil and mainly purple with bits of white spiraling towards the middle and you can also see a bit of clear glass in the middle.
The base is also still encased in clear glass while the rest of the surface (except the design) has a bit of a rough texture.
There is no signature on the base, which is probably where the seller focused on.

I'm getting more familiar with Scandinavian glass but not glass from France and this is the first time I've seen something like this in real life.
After some looking around online to my (untrained) eye the signature, shape and decorations seem to be fine but it sounds almost too good to be true so there is some doubt left just based on that.

Would love to read your opinion.

Thanks in advance :)

P.S.: Unfortunately it's not mine.

Hi, really pretty and gorgeous vase.  Can we see a photograph of the base please?  I'm wondering if it has a very large polished area on the base almost to the rim of the vase.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I don't have it here but should be able to get a picture, will post it then.

From what I remember the base is completely flat and smooth.

The mark looks very like this Daum mark.
And the quality looks Daum to me too.  ;D

It’s worth reading articles like this: https://www.realorrepro.com/article/New-cameo-glass-in-old-designs

My understanding is that some of the fakes can be very good. I think I read somewhere that you might be able to spot a fake cameo from photographs but it would be very hard to say if something was definitely genuine.

This vase is gently concave across the base, highly polished:

My initial gut response to seeing Ysala's vase was of a copy. I have nothing that I can pin that on, just a vague impression, will look through my books this evening for help.

I'd need both vases in my mitts to compare, but I'm now wondering about the speckly gold bits on the raised edges of the one in question.
John's snowdrop vase does look a bit more subtle, but purely in comparison. 8)

It looks the same shape as this vase.

I have no knowledge of authenticity. I know nothing about Daum as only own their Jades.

The design of the OP's is violets.

That said, I'd have bought it regardless as the work looks pretty (obviously based on price if I didn't think it was correct in real life).

Worth reading this other realorrepro article https://www.realorrepro.com/article/Many-signatures-found-on-new-cameo

Talking about the reproductions it says “Even more surprising was to discover that the apparently solid colored bodies were not a solid color but clear glass with only paper thin colored overlays”.

So unfortunately looks like clear glass is an indicator of a reproduction. A nice looking interesting vase though.

Thanks for the link Ekimp, that was an intersting read.
Also thanks for all the other replies.

It is a lovely piece and at the cost of a scope of icecream definately a bargain, even if it is a copy.

Here are a couple of pictures of the base.
