Glass loving cup with an 1896 3 Zar South African coin inside
« on: August 02, 2023, 08:04:25 AM »
Hi,
I have this interesting glass loving cup with an 1896 3 Zar South African  coin encased in it. The coin has been defaced to show President Kruger with a pipe in his mouth and wearing a hat!
Any ideas where this was made or if there is a particular message behind it?
Thanks
David

The coin is a form of trench art made by British P.O.W. during the Boer wars. More info here: https://www.tokencoins.com/zar08.htm.
A lovely piece of hand blown glass and I would think a one off. Certainly there is a story to be had here. I would only add that the machine threading seems to be extremely close together.

Wow!What a fantastic knowledge, thank you. It makes a really intriguing item even more so. I will try to do some research. I guess the next thing to do is to try to find something out about P.Sheldon, and see if I can find any records of him being in the Boer War!
