Display decanter?
« on: September 02, 2023, 07:38:11 PM »
Bought this item of glass today. I was intrigued by the shape and by the fact there was no way to pour the liquid out.
Could it be for perfume?, or purely for display ?.
Would love to know who it was manufactured by.
It is 260mm tall and is quite heavy at 1.6 kgs.

Hi, why is it there is no way to pour the liquid out?

When cleaning the "decanter" this afternoon i poured the water out and it came over the lip/rim like a waterfall.
I suppose claret jugs have a small indent to facilitate an even pour, and decanters have a small outlet for the same reason.
Maybe i am thinking about this "decanter" wrongly.

I see, not ideal then.

I should have made it clear that the stopper is removeable and a very good fit.

Very  familiar with the waterfall effect. The lip on this decanter fits the bill completely. Wide flat flange. By the time it flows off the edge of the lip it will occupy any where from one third to one half of the circumference of the lip. A small sink is needed to contain the pour.
Ground bottom and ground pontil?  Has that C. 1970 vibe to it.

For no reason I can put my finger on other than perhaps the considered/refined design I would look to Murano first. Polished pontil marks are not typical on Murano l but they are far from unheard of, would tend to agree with that date too.

Thanks for the input, always appreciated.
Looking at images of Murano decanters, there are some ball type stoppers with a small flange top but nothing close to the shape of mine.
The top of my decanter could be forgiven to be Mdina, but the bottom and solid colour i dont think is right for them.
After a good search on google images i could find nothing that resembled the shape of my decanter and hardly any with that solid brown colour.
Will keep looking,
Tim

McConnell’s The Decanter shows four 1960s decanters design by Ermanno Toso, Fratelli Toso, that have a wide flat flanged top. They look more delicate though, all similar to this one: https://www.artnet.com/artists/ermanno-toso/lidded-decanter-wDw3ye4jMXJuZQeurd-SyQ2

Studio glass perhaps. It's very brown, as in bottle brown, and not many mainstream manufacturers use such brown brown. Recycled glass perhaps? Is the base shiny and polished or matte ground
