Uranium glass vanity tray/ dish? Art deco?
« on: October 22, 2023, 10:53:51 AM »
Recently found an unmarked piece in a box lot of 1920s to 1960s assorted toys, eye glasses and this interesting piece. I haven't been able to find it in the usual on line searches.
I'm a total novice when it comes to glass, but the closest type of work I've found is by August Walther & Son (Sohne).
Any input you all could give me would be most appreciated

I appreciate any help you could give. The item is about 6 inches long by 3 wide. The bangs are indented to form a small pin tray I assume

Wow! I collect and research trinket sets and I have never seen this before. I'm not convinced it's part of a set, but it might be. It's certainly a very unusual piece.

Welcome to the board too.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

Hello Anne thank you so much for taking time to look at it. My wife and I love looking for the unusual in out of the way places here in rural Kentucky. Again we appreciate everyone's time

I can't help thinking it's most likely to be an ashtray.
The fringe looks like furrows for holding cigarettes. It's about the right size too.

Thanks for your interest it's a head scratcher for sure! Unless it's for an older/ smaller diameter cigarette like the old Turkish or gaspers from the 30's ...or maybe even cloves from the 60s. The ridges are too narrow for modern squares. Plus if you used that side all of the facial features are raised. But having said that....I'm not a smoker and you could be correct. It is fairly heavy for it's size. You folks are great with all you input. Thanks

I smoked in the '70s and there were some small brands around in the uk.
Sovereign and Number 6 were about the cheapest ones and I'm sure they were a lot thinner than what is considered a normal size now.

But we don't know anything about the origins of this piece, or its age, which would be the sorts of things to consider for ascertaining its intended use.
It is a lovely design. Meant to be seen. :)

An ashtray does seem reasonable, I have had a couple with similar themes made from pottery rather than glass.

John
