Frantisek Koudelka? Vase
« on: December 24, 2023, 03:24:28 PM »
It's probably wishful thinking but the only other vases I've found with this type of rim are by Koudelka for Prachen glass. He designed a varied range of vases but I can't find one like this. It is 17cm. tall with a snapped pontil, the design is made up of specks of colour with flowers engraved around them. The first photo shows the true colour.

This is unlikely to be of any help in identifying this, but just for information. Mtarfa made chunky "castellated" rims like that on some pieces. But I really don't think it's their work. ::)

Thanks Sue, I've found several with the cut petal rim by Mtarfa, but nothing the same, they do make a variety of styles so I won't rule them out.

The snapped pontil scar isn't Mtarfa as far as I'm aware, although I have no pieces with this style of rim to check.

The flowers around the spots could possibly have been added at a later date by somebody who was able to wield a vibrating tool. They're quite nicely done, but I am not absolutely convinced they are original.
This is no more than ultra-suspicious speculation on my part. It is completely ungrounded, nothing in particular actually suggests it. It is merely a possibility. ;D

Yes Sue, the ones on Ebay all have flat ground bases so Mtarfa can probably be ruled out. The flowers appear to have been done by someone who was very adept at using an engraving tool, difficult to do especially on curved surfaces. They are all very consistent and smoothly done so possibly not an amateur.

I did think the piece may well have had to be put onto a pontil rod to create the rim castellations, so it would be the base of a Mtarfa piece with a rim like that I'd want to check.
 :)

I've just noticed you've got an extra k in Koudela which might have affected your searches.
Koudelka seems to be a Japanese video/computer game.

:) I get in terrible tangles with searches - I don't get much coming up these days, I found it all very confusing and no glass came up - paintings and photographs did.
I have just checked all the indexes of my books. One book has it.

You are absolutely correct  8) and I am completely wrong.  :-[
Thank-you for putting me right.

Koudelka it is.
