Head Paperweight?
« on: January 12, 2024, 01:50:18 PM »
Good Afternoon,

I have a paperweight or sculpture in thr form of a warriors (?) head I'd love to be able to ID. One half of the head is matte or frosted and the other half has a scavo finish. When I bought it I thought it was possibly Scandi but after much research I'm starting to doubt it is.

It measures 12 cm high

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for the quick reply Legsy! I'm sure I've researched Bert Vallien but I'll try again and have a look at Matts Johansson too. Thanks for your suggestions!

Have they ever worked together?
I'd say it's a cast, but I'm not seeing Vallein in it. The face is a bit more Blowzone-style (originally african art, modified by Picasso and now a generally popular style), to my eyes, but I am not remotely up on artists who cast. Blowzone was run by Iestyn Davies, but he doesn't make glass any more.
The colours are a bit "in your face" for the artists I do know of.
But it looks like a good quality cast.

You might find more searching using the word "cast" rather than paperweight or sculpture.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Earth without art is just eh.

I think Legsy means Mats Jonasson. There are heads by him online.

I noticed the column of bubbles that looks like my Kjell Engman vase.
Probably Kjell Engman for Kosta Boda. I see he made many glass heads like this.

Thanks for the reply. I can't see a column of bubbles in my head :) Aren't his sculptures signed and numbered?

The rising column with color bubbles on the left of your last photo.
In my object it is only clearly visible on the convex side, where it is magnified by the lens effect.
I don't know anything else about him.  If you search "Kjell Engman glass head" you will find several that show similarities. They all seem to me to be unique, very different colors, but I can't say anything about that. My item has a clear sticker with Kosta Boda. see bottom in the close up.

The column isn't inside the head, that's the colour applied to the back of the head showing through. I'll have a look, thanks for the information
