Sowerby 1239 & 1174
« on: June 02, 2024, 06:15:11 PM »
From today's boot sale, a Sowerby 1239 3 1/4" vase and a 1174 4 3/4" dish. The vase has a very faint Sowerby mark, the dish has a very clear Sowerby mark and  lozenge  for 24/7/1876 which is the Rd.302114/5. Conveniently they are shown on P.5 of the 1880 catalogue.

Well done Nev, Sowerby Gold is not that common. Where was the boot sale, I lived in your area most of my life.

Hello Mike, the boot sale is held on Thatcham Memorial Field, I've found a few good pieces there. As the catalogues from around the time show just vitro porcelain glass I'd often wondered whether Sowerby were also making clear glass, this confirms they were.

Hello Nev. Been there many many times, I lived not far away and remember when the area just north of there was all fields, all gone now.
Gold is a really nice, bright, translucent amber. They were making other translucent colours, see pics, some of these may have been combined with white to make the malachite colours, they were also used as the base colour for some of their 'marble' glass.

Hello Mike, if you are interested in buying these two pieces you can have them for £10 including postage. I can contact you via your website to sort out the details. The dish has a chip on the base and a crack on the handle, the vase has chips on the base.
