St. Louis? Dog Paperweight.
« on: August 16, 2024, 12:58:12 PM »
My first thoughts were possibly French or English and there is one of these on GQG attributed to St. Louis but I can't find it in any of the catalogues. It is hollow, 13cm. tall and 10cm. base diameter.

I recently discussed this on another forum. I think your frosted one is Henry Greener, the reason behind this is because my father has a green one which I only recently checked with a uv light and ding dong it glowed to my surprise. The dark green blue is a known greener colour. Ours is unmarked. Also a few years back I discussed this shape with an experienced dealer at the Birmingham glass fair and he said he had one with the Greener trade mark.
It seems there are variations of a dos and at least one or two sizes of cat. So I think the mould may???? Have originated with greener 1870ish then somehow Baccarat made them the baccarat cat is signed but the dog is not signed. The baccarat ones are heavier and better quality, and at a later date 1920-30 Meisenthal made a spatter glass version. There are out of date  articles (imo)on them in the. Pressed Glass korrespondant.
The Greener ones are exceptionally rare and also come in Vaseline. I may add further information cheers Mike

Nev it might be worth checking yours for a manganese glow.

Thanks Mike, there's no mark on mine and not a hint of manganese glow. It weighs 560gms/ 1lb. 3oz. and has lots of wear on the base. I will investigate further. Cheers Nev.

Hi Nev
I just weighed my two, green one 430grams, Frosted 635 grams. Looking at the top of the pattern of the plinth I wonder if your frosted one is like my frosted one and actually Baccarat? As the green one has more detail in the pattern and bearing in mind the weight of yours is similar to my frosted one.
It’s difficult to tell them apart unless you have them in your hand. The Baccarat ones we have seem far better quality than the green one. Mike

I think it might remain a mystery unless a catalogue image emerges. I believe Baccarat and St. louis shared designs so it could be by either, mine does appear to be a good quality moulding. The density is around 3.3-3.4 gcm3. so it is lead glass.
