What have i found?
« on: October 20, 2024, 02:30:01 PM »
Picked this up today and was very happy to own it.
I have a theory of what this might be but would love to have some input from the board members.
My theory might just be wishful thinking.
It is 5.5inches tall,6.25 inches at the top and 4.5 inches at the base.
Sorry for the quality of the pictures.

It's delightful.  Very Art Deco - is it? or is it a bit later? No polished pontil mark(? it's difficult to tell).
If not, is it Czech?

Thanks for the reply M. i was thinking/hoping it could be British art deco.
There is no polished pontil.
I will try and find some Czech images.

definitely.
I think it looks like flowers and grasses a bit like this kind of whimsical decoration:

https://www.artkabinet.cz/en/auction/auction-results/alfred-dorn-art-deco-vase.html

But it also reminds me of moons so makes me think 50s space age type thing.  No polished pontil and a cut rim might make me think Czech. That's all guesswork though.

What were you thinking of?  Stuart perhaps? Something in the British Glass Hajdamach book?  I'll have a look.

It has a lot of base wear so is it heavy?

Reminds me of Kandinsky, this might be of interest: https://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,50719.msg

Yes , i take your point about the Glass in the Czech link. In the book, British glass between the wars published by Dudley leisure services, on page 31
there is a whisky set with similar themes designed by Paul Nash for the British art in industry exhibition 1935.
It says that Stuart & sons  were asked to take part in the exhibition .
This is all just speculation on my behalf.
The vase is not heavy and for the amount of base wear the vase is in very good nick.

Wow, i would be happy if my British art deco theory was wrong and the vase was anything to do with Kandinsky.
Thanks for posting that link Ekimp.

I should have said Franz Welz not Kandinsky.

ok I've looked at British Glass Between the Wars and I see what you mean.  It's not the same design though but similar idea.  However:
- having looked under a magnifying glass it's hard to tell but I think the circles on the Stuart BGBtW are engraved on
-  the no pontil and cut rim would still make me think Czech rather than British as a first port of call to look.  But I could be very wrong :)
Have you checked Hajdamach British Glass?

The photographs in BGBtW are terrible to see clearly, but there is a decanter page 93 by Laura Knight for Stuart that also reminds me of your vase whimsical, sparse, lines and circles (can't see how that circle was done but perhaps Hajdamach will have a better picture - will go look)
