Stretched vase. Maltese? Signed. Any ID please?
« on: December 18, 2024, 07:13:26 PM »
Hello, can any members give an ID on this vase please? It is signed on the base but I can't decipher the name. White, black flecks and brown. 8 inches tall. The base is polished and flat plus there is a sllght iridescence in the darer colours. Also, the base is tapered inwards about an inch. Thank you for any input or help as always.

I don't think it's Maltese.
I had a beaked Mdina vase made by Boffo, using the swinging technique he had previously used at whitefriars, but to my knowledge that was a complete one off, and made early on, I suspect when Harris was still there.
Unless it's something very new.
But I can't make much out of the mark on the bottom. The design in the piece - the colours and the movement in them look rather Makora-ish, but I think this might be a bit more sophisticated than that.
Sorry not to be of more positive help. :)
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Thank you for the input Sue. It's a mystery. I can't find one like it on Google. It is quite a heavy piece...Murano style thickness. I also think the signature in the 1st base pic is the right way up. The 2nd base pic signature doesn't look right (upside down). It is a good quality vase, well made and sturdy...Has that Isle of Wight feel if you now what I mean. The quest continues!

I do have pics of the beaked Mdina vase. The second pic is of a group with the early spiral design in.

I could not make Valetta out from the marks. I did try!
Good one, Suzy. :-*

My Boffo one must have been the inspiration.  ;D

That's it Suzy...you got it. Thank you. And I can see 'Valletta' in the signature too. The search is finished. Thanks to Sue and Suzy for your help.
