Greener fox covered sugar with grapes?!
(1/1)
nicola:
Hi everyone
I bought this Greener fox covered sugar out of curiosity because of the lid - which has grapes on the knop yet the body of the lid is the same as the body of the bowl.
Does anyone know if this is a Frankenstein piece or if it’s just Greener being Greener. Each one has an early lion and star trademark.
I’ve searched my books and it only appears in an early edition of Marking Times without the lid and with a matching jug.
In doing this I realised that while I have Jobling books but I don’t have much about Greener. Has any catalogues surfaced or is it an information black hole?
Many thanks :)
Mosquito:
Maybe inspired by Aesop’s fable of the fox and the grapes? That would also explain why the grapes are on the lid and hence out of reach of the fox.
nicola:
Oh, that would be very clever! I hadn’t even thought of that. Thank you. It would also follow the same pattern as the dogs and cat sugar bowl by Davidson.
I think you solved the mystery!
thewingedsphinx:
I’ve wondered what the lid looked like for years for this set as my father has a bowl without a lid and a creamer, so its good see this, (was this recently on eBay) it’s an uncommon unregistered pattern from Greener. I always thought it would have had an animal finial rather than grapes, but mosquitos explanation makes good sense. Both Davidson and Sowerby made similar with animal finials. It’s a rare find with the lid.
Thanks for sharing.
nicola:
Yes, me too! It was the one on eBay and it was curiosity about the lid that prompted me to get it even with the damage. I try to restrict (lol) my collection by concentrating on ‘anything with a lid’ so have the Davidson Cat and Dog (and the Inwald version too which is very gaudy) and Punch butter dish, but still missing the Sowerby monkey lidded sugar - although I do have everything else in the suite, one day - fingers crossed.
At least the mystery has been solved 🙌
