Lovely Art Deco Uranium Wine Glas
« on: September 09, 2025, 01:28:28 PM »
Hello everyone,

I stumbled across this pretty little crystal wine glass with a beautiful Art Deco garland decoration. I think it dates back to the 1920s, but I would love to know if any of you can tell me more about its origins?

Maybe it's just me, but I find the decoration so beautiful that I can imagine it coming from a more renowned manufacturer?
If it's just my personal enthusiasm for this glass and you consider it to be a standard product, that's okay too. I think you can already tell from the presentation that I like it.

hard facts: uranium glas Cup on cut crystal stem, no signatures or markings, art-deco garland decoration, found in germany

Kind regards from germany Kai!

Better than the average I think. A lot going for it. Cut reverse baluster stem, nice shaped knot between the main stem and bowl and nice color too. Always pleasing to my eye when I see the bowl part set into the stem like its on a pedestal. Looks like the garland decor acid etched. Or is it engraved?

As far as I know this should be an acid etched decor. No visible grind or needle marks and a very consistent, slightly rough surface.

That's a lovely glass.  Nice shape and size bowl and impeccable stem.
I think it might be quite difficult to pin this down.  I never find a huge amount of documentation on wineglasses - it might be there somewhere but it's very difficult to find reference sources.  However if you search in German there might be more available to see?

I've looked in the Harrach 'From Neuwelt to the Whole World' (Mergl) book and can't see anything similar in terms of colour, dekor or construction.
Rheinische Glashutten did use this green colour here (see link) , but I don't know about whether they used acid etched decoration?

Josephinenhutte might be another source however I don't have the book unfortunately.

Thank you vor your response. I own only three generic books about utility glas from 1850 till 1980 where i couldnt find something similar.

I think i should add that the pictures where taken with additional UV Light. The natural color is less intense.

I tried reverse image searches in all directions without result. If it remains a mystery, that's okay too.

Edit 1:
Just a minute later i found at least one auction with identical decor. The seller says its pre 1900 , france.

That auction was the final hint.

I found an early version of the glas with the exact same decor. It is from Baccarat.

My conlcusion so far: the decor is called "Bordure vénitienne" and it was used from 1888 until (at least) 1897. The only thing i cant find is the Service Type. I first thought its from the "Balloon" Service but they neither have a cut stem or a tapered cup.

Thank you for posting your find :) It's always great to see the actual item compared to the picture.
