Harry Powell Glasses
« on: October 31, 2025, 12:27:00 PM »
I think these are beautiful and a bit special. I've looked through Lesley Jackson's Whitefriars book but can't find this exact design, however I believe them to be "Poppy Head" pattern by Harry Powell from around 1900. They are 7.5" tall, the bowls are wrythen with four dents.

Might they be Walsh Walsh? Figure 85 on page 32 of Reynolds shows a clear wine service with “sham-flute twist” and looks like there is also a dimple. The bowls look the same.

Thanks Ekimp, I went through the Walsh book and saw them  but decided that with the shape, twist and four dimples that mine were Powell, but I could be wrong. I have some of the Walsh tumblers and they have a slight flute twist but not the dimples. Mine could still be by someone else though.

Yes, I don’t know. The poppy head decanter shown in Lesley Jackson doesn’t look to have any twist to the ribs though and couldn’t see a twist mentioned in the text. Also, the indentations in the side aren’t just dimples but prominent large dents. There is a better picture of a poppy head decanter in McConnell’s Decanter, it looks the same as the one on the love decanter website here: http://www.lovedecanters.co.uk/LDWhiteDecanterPre1900.html

They’re very nice anyway!

Yes, I'd seen a wrythen glass on the lovedecanters site too pre-1900.

That’s interesting as he has your type of glass as Walsh. http://www.lovedecanters.co.uk/LDJWWTable.html

Looks like they could be Walsh then. I don't know.

I did have a handful of these recently:

but I think Nev's match the "Venetian Suite" pattern better, it is the density of the ribs that seem to make the difference:

If the colour matches this bunch then in my mind no contest...

Thanks John, the colour matches so I'm going to agree they are Walsh Venetian Suite. I can't find a reference to that name in Reynolds.

Walsh Walsh seems highly likely to me. Powell didn't really do uranium glass except for straw opal, which these most definitely are not
