Hi...just joined forum.  Am a Canadian.  I am too both researching Murano and Chalet glass.  Do not know if you have been to this site about Chalet Glass

http://www.canadiandesignresource.ca/officialgallery/?p=594

Just thought I would poke it in.... :)

Hi,
I have just uploaded this album, (64 images) of similar glass to Chalet:
http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/thumbnails.php?album=517
Note that none is Chalet or Murano.
All images in this album are © 1998-2007. www.sklounion.com.

Lovely gallery Marcus!

But I'm now totally confused and would love to know just how to tell one maker from another!   Is it something you are able to explain, or is it down to your years of experience and careful looking at and handling glass?

Hi Leni,
I am afraid that probably the only people that could say for sure, are the people who made/make the glass.
Once the label comes off, then I think, even experts have trouble telling items apart. Sure there are certain clues, but the very nature of off-hand art glass such as are being discussed in this thread, means no indicator can be other than an indicator, and certainly an indicator cannot be a guarantee of identification. However, the majority of Chalet is drawn or pulled, where Czech, appears to be a roughly 50-50 mix of blown and drawn. Added to that is the export of glass from the countries involved, Italy Canada and CZ, then you have a real problem.
Colour does help, but not always. Form can help, but many forms are replicated in all producing countries.
Even when you have catalogues, I doubt anyone can be certain, and probably the safest way would be to say: "Possibly..Chalet, Murano, Czech....."
Regards,
Marcus

Thank you, Marcus  :-*  But you say of the glass in your gallery, "Note that none is Chalet or Murano."  Does this mean that all those pieces you show are identifiable in some way, such as having a label or mark of some kind?

Hi Leni,
Simpler than that I am afraid, these items were supplied direct by one factory, (Chribska) and the images were specifically taken to create a catalogue of that factories production. Images were taken in the Czech Republic, thus no possibility of Murano or Chalet items being included at the time of the photos.

Marcus

Baccarat and Val St. Lambert also produced pieces in these styles... so add France and Belgium to the list. In due course those catalogues will go on-line with the Glass Study.

Although the company's owners have changed, this is the current on-line catalogue of Chribska:

The four links on this page show the principal ranges of off-hand glass.
