Just bought this incredibly pretty WMF tazza, because I felt in love with the art nouveau shape and the vaseline/cranberry/crackle mish-mash it's got going on.

Any clues as to date and/or designer? I know nothing much about WMF, is the glass Ikora?

Hey Nic,

Doesn't look anything like WMF Ikora....this looks like a very nice piece of glass from 1880's..

Yeah, I had a looksie around the internet and couldn't find anything which even vaguely matched up with it under the Ikora umbrella.

The seller had a photograph of the maker's mark, and it looks like the WMF 'ostrich' logo - used up until 1914, according to a website I looked at - although to be honest, the photograph is fairly indistinct. But it wasn't too expensive, so I don't mind so much if it's not WMF.

I can see Ivo's point - the glass does look a touch earlier than the base. As you say, 1880's or thereabouts for the glass... but the base, to me, looks turn of the century give or take a decade either way.

But I'm hoping that it's not a marriage, obviously. :lol: The suspected period of the glass and that of the base do over-lap. A bit.

Any vaseline collectors out there willing to chance their arm at suggesting a manufacturer?

It arrived about 20 minutes ago. It's marked WMF, although I can't find the exact mark elsewhere through Googling, so I can't date it.

I would guess that the bowl is original, as it fits snuggly, the base has been ground to fit nicely into the metal cup and there's corresponding surface-wear on the inside of the bowl from the securing screw. But, of course, that's just my guess and they could be later additions to the bowl.

And it's silver-plate on brass... which someone has cleaned a little too vigorously, so I'll have to have it replated at some point.

Ivo, you were, as usual, quite correct... it's not the original bowl. Just wishful thinking on my part. *sigh*

The original bowl looks something rather like this, which I've just purchased:

At least I've now got a reference point for finding an original bowl. I'm hoping it's a common enough design and was maybe applied to lesser WMF tazzas also.... Good job I'm patient with this kind of thing.
