Info on Verrerie d' Art de Bendor
« on: January 04, 2007, 05:34:08 PM »
Can anyone provide specific data on this small glassworks that was active at least in the 1960's? They were on the Island of Bendor a small rocky island south of Bandol a port between Marseilles and Toulon. Items do pop up on eBay. The made decorative glassware.

The only google I could get was

"* L'île de Bendor (propriété Paul Ricard) est un centre** touristique, culturel et sportif ; on peut y visiter : le village provençal, le jardin zoologique, une verrerie d'art, un musée de la mer (coquillages, poissons, maquettes de bateaux), un musée des vins et spiritueux (6000 bouteilles provenant de 34 pays) ; il y a également un palais des Congrès, une fresque de Dali."

But every other mention of the islands attractions does not mention the glassworks so I presume they have closed ???

The map has PauL Ricard's name under the Island's name so perhaps he owns it and ran the glassworks... I will follow that trail for now but if anyone already knows more about this please post.

Paul Ricard: Could it be this one who appears to be dead http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Ricard Yup, seems to be the chappie Paul Ricard fit l’acquisition de deux îles : les Embiez, au large de Six-Fours-les-Plages, et qui est un haut lieu touristique de la Côte d’Azur ainsi que l’île de Bendor au large de Bandol,un endroit paradisiaque plus intimiste et plus personnel.

So was it just a rich mans hobby? Except that real people worked there too! (At least 5 glassmakers)

I actually start French classes next week but it appears he did an apprenticeship at Bendor

Nonetheless an interesting glass artist (Gérard Torcheux) in his own right, thanks for the link.

It was definitely open in the late 1960's, when it was run by Jean-Pierre Paoli.

I can't find out any more information though, sorry  ::)
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

Summer 1977 - we had a 5!-weeks holiday at Bandol - unfortunately I was'nt interested in glass at that time  >:D (pregnant, scuba-diving, cooking and enjoying the time with our friends from Milano, we shared the house)
lovely impressions and remembering that is nice also  :)

Hi,
Bendor island in the south of France indeed hosted under the management of Paul Ricard (born near by in Marseille and founder of what is now the Pernod Ricard Group) for many year a glasswork factory in the 60' & 70', then the factory closed. You can find some info following this link http://www.euvs.org/fr/visit/island
Waldorf-Astoria Hotel et le Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York have some pieces from the island,
cheers
