Two European? carnival bowls
Lustrousstone:
I haven't been able to identify these yet :-\ , although I'm working on it. The closest I can come to this one
is Kokomo, but that only seems to be a rose bowl. As Glen says there are too many stars ??? Click to enlarge
And this one
I'm veering between Sowerby from the edge design and Rindskopf from the pattern and the colour. Click to enlarge
The top one has good irridescence and a slightly dodgy shape. The pattern from the middle of the star upwards has lost its definition. 9 inches across.
The big one seems huge, but its only 10 inches across. Pale golden irridescence. It's probably one of those fit-on-top-of-a-comport bowls, as the ground foot has a cogged outer rim
Glen:
Both these items are (to the best of my knowledge) currently not confirmed as to maker. The first one has been named "Star & Studs", the second one "Petals & Prisms". I have long suspected Rindskopf to be the maker of "Petals & Prisms" but I have been unable to verify that from catalogues.
You are absolutely correct, Christine, that the large "Petals & Prisms" bowl fits atop an upturned (stemmed) sugar.
Lustrousstone:
Thanks Glen, seems like I'm learning something by working my way through a certain book ;).
Now what I want to know is why is one third of my CG collection named but without parents: Sentinel Rose, Split Diamond (creamer and bowl), Petals and Prisms, Stars and Studs, apart from the plain ribbed bowl for "grapes", which has neither name nor parents :'(? How come they're the ones I seem to find?
Glen:
Oh it's not just you :o I have plenty of those. In fact it was the fact that there were so many "unknowns" that I started to research back in the early 1990s. Possibly the best "eureka moment" was when I uncovered Rindskopf as a maker of Carnival - that helped move a lot of "unknowns" into the attributed category.
UK collectors are lucky ( ::)) in that a lot of mystery items do tend to turn up here.........
It's all part of the Magic & Mystery (now you know where our first book title came from :-\).
EDITED TO ADD: What's the Sentinel Rose pattern? My mind's gone blank?
Glen:
I think it's just dawned on me ...Serpentine Rose?
