So the transfer design pre-dates the packaging design and as the last Routemasters were withdrawn on 9 December

Which would probably date them to somewhere during 1958, during the phasing out of the white-top and phasing in of the total red.
So, it could be that the 58 stamped on the box does actually refer to the date of 1958, and that was when they were boxed.

Della, and David, there is a set of london scenes on eBay, but they have a metal tray with them and a sticker on the tray saying marvel, might be a clue eBay nr 110092167344
The buses are all red.

Thanks Sue. As they are almost certainly 'open-stock' transfers, this means they could have been used by any number of makers. An example of this is for the 1953 Coronation, where the familiar Royal Crest can be seen on several different glass items.

Another example is Thelwell cartoons on French glasses...

It's OK David modern buses last less than ten years and cost a lot more too!

Transfers probably have a limited shelf life which would limit the use of a particular design although the printing plates could have been stored for a number of years and re-used. That needs research via a transfer company...
