Title: Brockwitz Lion Handle Bowl with Deutschland mark on the bottom
Post by: Decolucretia on May 06, 2007, 03:47:55 AM
Hi there - another Brockwitz question.  I have a pink Brockwitz Lion Handle Fruit Bowl (pictured below) and it has a acid (?) mark on the bottom that reads 'Deutschland'.  I haven't seen this before on any other Brockwitz glass and wondered if others had - I've looked over all my other pieces and can't find anything.  Perhaps it was common for Brockwitz to mark their bowls?  Any thoughts?

My lion handled Brockwitz bowl is marked like this too. None of my other pieces of Brockwitz are marked thus. I don't think it was common for Brockwitz to mark their glass - and it's good to have an example of it.

It's good to have an example of a lion handled bowl at all, IMHO!  I envy you both! :-[

Why are they so much rarer than the ubiquitous fish handled bowl?  Did Brockwitz make so many more of those?  (BTW, I saw a blue one go for an amazing sum recently! :o Is it only the clear ones that are common?)

How many different animal handled bowls were made, and why would only the lion handled one be marked?  Any ideas?  ???

Hi Leni - Brockwitz glass is a passion of mine, so it has been a case of searching for years to get the Lion bowl. Ours is a blue one, and in fact I bought it from a German seller.

I believe that there are 4 different "creature" handles (one is fishes  :).... ooh, weird grammar!) Fish, birds (budgerigars?), squirrels and lions. I have a blue squirrel handled bowl (also from Germany), a pink fish handled bowl (bought in the UK) and a bird handled vase in amber (bought in the UK years and years ago). (There's also the vase with the two little birds, but they are not handles).

It's possible that the rarity / trade policy, marking etc., of these has been covered in Siegmar Gieselberger's discussions, but my German is non-existant and so hopefully Pamela will be able to throw some light on all this. I can say that one of the German dealers who I bought from told me that Brockwitz exported most of their decorative glass (Carnival and these splendid items included). I can't verify that, so I look forward to hearing from Pamela.

I'm a bit of a Brockwitz glass fan too - I wonder why they only appear to have marked the lion handled bowls?  I'd love to see a picture of your blue bowls Glen - they must look stunning.  I have a few of the others including the squirrel (in amber), the fish(in the usual clear glass) and a tall vase version of the budgies (in pink).  Still on the hunt for the stunning budgie fruit bowl.  BTW, both the squirrel and lion versions were purchased from Germany but the fish handled one came from the States (they certainly do get around!).

Hi Pamela - is your lion handle Brockwitz bowl marked with 'Deutschland' too?

Hi Leni - thanks for your kind comment and also for this very good question. I've been thinking about it and my guess (only a guess) is that it's possible that the fish handled one was easier to make. I can imagine that the squirrel and lion handled ones may have had more breakage. There are more vulnerable sections of glass in those.

And also, for the same reason, it's possible that more fish handled ones have survived.

Can I ask between which years would the Deutschland mark be used as I have just bought a Walther Schmetterling with the mark on the base .

Thank Roy
