Title: Customised Perthshire oddity/curiousity?
Post by: Glassheart on April 23, 2024, 04:45:12 PM
Dear all,
I stumbled across this curiosity at a bric & brac shop the other day.  Being a Perthshire fan,  I recognised the canes.  However,  if I’m not mistaken this is a customised weight which has been converted I think to a candleholder/ornament.  Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this started life as a pp52 Inkwell and maybe due to damage,  it’s had its neck and top sawn off and then smoothed over and made into a candleholder ornament.  What’s interesting is that it has Xmas canes,  you can see Santa,  Xmas tree, a sleigh and an odd looking face which I think is a snowman,  as it works well as a Xmas ornament!

I’ve never seen anything like it,  but cannot find it online anywhere which is why I think it’s been modified at some stage.  Would you all agree?

Unfortunately I can’t seem to upload any more pics… due to the size restriction.  I thought you could post more per post?

Looks like a Perthshire "Marble" - which (despite the name) has a flattened base. See page 155 of the "Complete Guide ..."

Thanks for the insight,  yes I agree looks like a Perthshire marble,  however it’s bigger than that.  Also given the hollow centre I do think it started life as a Perthshire scent bottle ornament.  I can’t find a design like it anywhere so definitely think it’s been modified now into, a candle holder of some sort.

It’s unique !

Do Perthshire scent bottles not have the same design as inkwells and have a very thick clear casing wth the canes inside the bottom?
This, being hollow, seems much more along the lines of a candleholder, or even a table cigarette lighter.
Although I rather suspect Perthshire might have been founded a bit later than the time smoking finally became frowned upon.

Yes,  I probably meant inkwell/bottle.  When I mean hollow,  it’s only hollow from the top which I presume is where the neck of a bottle begins?  It’s quite solid and from picture 2 in the first post you can see where the hole starts and it’s been smoothed over at the neck (or cut depending on if we think it’s modified).  I have the Perthshire book and cannot see any candle holders or anything similar so either this is modified or it’s a one off piece or even a curiosity made for fun?  Having all those Xmas canes then gets me thinking it was made as a custom Xmas candle holder,  table piece?   What do you think?

Being hollow, it was obviously blown like this. I'd suspect something experimental that was of good enough quality to put the label on and put out for sale.
But the flat rim with no decor suggests it might have had something added on top - hence my mention of cigarette lighters.
Maybe a toothpick holder?
As you may well know, Caithness sells clearly marked seconds.

It can't be a modified or altered bottle because there is no clear casing over the canes. That would be pretty much impossible to remove nicely.

Thanks.  Very interesting observations.  I attach some pics of a Perthshire inkwell I found online.  It had very similar canes and the rounded bottom is very similar in size to mine.  I was looking at the neck and guesstimating where the neck would end and the modification made.  It kind of aligns in terms of proportions which is why I thought originally it was custom made.  Also being there is nothing like a Perthshire candle holder or / Vase / toothpick holder  (until I am proved otherwise)is why I think it is a one off maybe custom piece.

T'interweb fooled me. :-[
I was searching for an uncased bottle, and I found something that looked exactly like that - but the selled had decided it was Lundberg. So I ignored it.
Silly me.
Yes, your thing could easily be something like that posy, perhaps the top got damaged and it was cut down and polished?
