Only the second of these things I've seen - the first, which I no longer have, measured 8.5/8". But the size of this one at 7.5/8" seems not to be recorded in David's book, 'Chance Expressions' - so unsure if this would be called a bowl or dish.
Does anyone know if this size is more uncommon. Thanks for looking. :)
P.S. 50p yesterday morning ;D
-
I just checked mine and it is the larger 8.5/8" diameter one too, Paul, (22cm across x 5cm deep):

50p is a bargain! :P
-
Paul; mine is the same size as yours, bowl, dish, whatever it's called, ::) ;D ;D
-
thanks to both - I get the impression that as David didn't record this slightly smaller size, then maybe it's a tad rarer (and I'm a big fan of rare things). In pursuit of the act of thinning out in order to make room for those things for which I feel more affection, I stopped collecting Chance some year or more ago, and now have only a couple of Yasmin plates plus this bowl.
I suppose always worth keeping the eye in on these sort of pieces just in case one day I come across a Baxter designed flashed ruby one that Chance did, which must be worth more, surely.
-
Nice one Paul.... and a real bargain.
Look at the price of this one!

Jam for tea!!

thanks Rosie - well it's yours then for half that price then - I need to show a profit ;)
Think the last one cost me a fiver, and when I picked this one up on Sunday morning I half expected the seller to say at the least that or more, so very surprised to almost be given the thing. Perhaps it's my acting in a seemingly nonchalant disinterested way that gets me bargains.
I've become really good at saying........"oh, so couple of quid no good to you then?" - when they've asked for five quid or more, and I then go to put the thing down and start to walk away - but you have to do that in a slow cautious way, in case some other know-all jumps on it. ;D
Can only assume the W/Fs ones really are much rarer.

There are a few on Miller's Antiques and the price is even higher...

I don't collect this sort of thing Paul, but that was a kind offer thank you... however, I will 'nonchalantly walk away and let some other know-all jump on it'!! ;D

fifty pee rather belies the fact that I spend a king's ransom on fuel to get to some of these places, so really not as cheap as I pretend.
I thought the heat had gone out of the Chance price levels - maybe it's just the high spots that still command a few shillings more.
I also think the blue versions of these pieces fetch more than the ruby ones.
-
If I see a blue one going cheep, I will let you know Paul... OK?
-
sure, no doubt it'll be a blue-bird one ;)
-
Yes, probably in Dover or over the rainbow. :D
-
Is this blue bird pie heading for the Cafe...??? ;)

I think Chance defined the smaller 'bowls' as dishes, and the larger 'dishes' as bowls (IYSWIM! ;D ) But the dish and bowl are both recorded in my book, with photo, p.59, Paul.
So:
Smaller than 6-in* then it's a dish (what you would eat from)
Larger than 6-in* then it's a bowl (what you would serve from)
* Or thereabouts (6-in = 15cm)
The blue are definitely scarcer, but the ruby ones still seem to fetch a good price - I'll always buy them as long as Patricia's not looking...
-
thanks David - I only mentioned this one as the size didn't appear on page 59 - and wondered if I had something rare ;).
quote............. "I'll always buy them as long as Patricia's not looking"... heaven forbid, do I detect a man under the thumb ;D ;)
I'll send you an off board note about my proposed commercials dealings re the Yasmin plates and this one :)
that's it Anne :-[

Ah, this is the Dowl, sometimes called a Bish... ahem... ;D
Sorry, my cronky eyes saw that as 6-in+, not 7-in+ and so this is the interim size, and as you rightly say not recorded in Chance Expressions. At the time of writing I recorded that size on p.38, but not in Intaglio. The following is correct:
No. 16 7½-in (19cm) Nut Bowl
So the full range of Dishes and Bowls as taken from a 1969 catalogue is:
11. 6¼-in (16.5) Fruit Dish
16. 7½-in (19) Nut Bowl
12. 8½-in (21.2) Fruit Bowl
51. 10-in (25) Fruit Bowl
32. 12-in (30.5) Bowl
Because moulds never changed (apart from the radical design swing in 1969–70), these sizes would be pretty close over the years and would never alter that much (the odd +/- ¼-in would be the most I suppose).
The trouble with the quoted measurements is that Chance rounded it to the nearest ¼-in, and they would inevitably alter slightly from batch to batch. So I was either measuring examples or being quoted dimensions by other people, and that leads to some minor discrepancies. I'll be re-issuing tables in Chance Additions based on the catalogues now that I have this documentation.

sorry, not putting my nuts in it for anyone...........it's too small ;). Thanks for the explanation. :)
this is the Davidson bowl I use for nuts at Christmas - I forget what the pattern No. is - got to be one of the biggest bowls I've ever seen - it's 13" across and about 6" deep. :)
