Title: CMS Krasno (S. Reich) bubbly floral bowl
Post by: rocco on March 23, 2014, 01:58:35 PM
I love these 1940s hotworked pieces made at Českomoravské sklárny (CMS, former S. Reich & Co), sort of precedessors of early Skrdlovice. :)
No wonder, several Skrdovice designers had worked there...

Quite a complex piece with flowers suspended in bubbly glass. Diameter 24 cm.
Marked to the base with a deeply etched mark, "R" and "Krasno".

My bowl can also be seen in the CMS 1945/6 catalogue Jindrich kindly made available on his site: >> Link (https://picasaweb.google.com/104509467784289017506/CMSReichKrasno194546?authkey=Gv1sRgCMn-k4r20fyZ1gE&noredirect=1#5442141558276963074)

I found this very interesting article online >> Link (http://issuu.com/icom-glass_reviewsonglass01/docs/review_on_glass_2/19), with lots of information on CMS 1930s/40s production.
Three designers for this range of hotworked pieces with flowers are mentioned: Frantisek Zemek, Milena Veliskova and Ludvika Smrckova.
I guess I will not get closer than that...

Wow, Michael, fantastic bowl!  Love the red polka-dots in it.  And great that you found a reference for it in the CMS catalogue.

You are a very lucky man!  WONDEFUL addition to your collection.  ;D

Thank you Anik!
I was actually looking out for pieces from that CMS catalogue ;D
They don't seem to crop up that often, so I am extremely pleased.

Interesting addition Michael.  :) - I would never have guessed the age in a million years, certainly has a very contemporary feel about it.

Thanks, Greg!
Yes, quite a unique and unusual style, I don't recall having seen anything similarish from other 1930s/40s glass makers.

Emanuel Beranek and Milena Veliskova designed several pieces in this vein for Skrdlovice in the late 1940s.
Here are two from my collection...

Very nice examples Michael, particularly like the Beranek snail bowl. Vienna, certainly seems the place for Skrdlovice.  :)

That's very gorgeous and thanks for the link :)

You have a great eye Michael - I find it so hard to imagine what a piece would look like from a black and white photo, so would have a hard time spotting a piece and knowing what it was.

I also love the snail bowl.  Very stylish.

Another one from this range, can be found in the same >> CMS Krasno 1945-46 catalogue on Jindrich's site (https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipMReokENY8TynLOGVjJZxlrekWWcKJ0yxTUX6q9oDg3LjHMHCdvBSzX1oIpMbEeCA?key=TTFLdU1HV1BsTVdBUFU0dExMYWc2ZEp3TGlCLVhB)

Has the R etched mark to the side.
One of my favourite additions from the last years :)

Very interesting piece. Most of the krasno I am familiar with is like the early Beranek Pulegoso technique that was learned at Krasno.

Thank you Craig!
Yes, this CMS Krasno range is quite unique. The pulegoso pieces are more commonly seen -- like the lamps I posted in the other thread.

The black-and-white catalogue in the link I posted above shows many pieces in this style with bubbles or multicolour spatter plus flowers suspended in thick clear glass.

I attach a pic of a studio glass vase by Jindra Beranek, sort of a remake of one of these vases (his father Emanuel Beranek made in the 1940s for CMS Krasno).
