Title: Wine glass in the style of Otto Prutscher - who made it
Post by: thomas on October 20, 2011, 09:59:52 PM
I bought this wine glass in the early 80's from a dealer who said it was brought to the US by a soldier stationed in Germany.  She didn't know when the soldier returned to the US.   I bought it because the style of the glass - particularly the stem - is similar to glassware designed by Otto Prutscher in Vienna, Austria.  It is 8" (approx. 20cm) tall.  Is anyone familiar with a manufacturer who produced a line of stemware in the style of Prutscher?  Can anyone offer a date or attribution for this glass?

I found a photo on Google images that is like my glass and answers the "who made it" question.  Can I legally post the photo to this site?  At the bottom in small letters it says "all rights reserved".  This is a non-profit educational site - I don't know whether that matters.

Thomas I don't think you can.
But you can put a link to the site on here I believe.
When you do could you put the information on who made it please?  but without copying the information directly on the link I guess?
I'm very curious to know 'whodunnit'?  It's a fabulous piece of glass.

I have been scanning internet images for a glass like this one for a long time.  Last week I actually found one.  The glass is exactly like this one except it is red instead of green.  It was sold at auction in London in June of 2010.  If the listing of the auction house is correct then the attribution for this glass is:
Austrian
Designed by Otto Prutscher (Vienna Workshop)
Probably manufactured by Bakalowits (Bakalowitz) or Adolf Meyr's Neffe
Circa 1910
An appraiser and a well known museum say that Bakalowits which started out as a simple retail glass shop later had fine technicians and made glass for Prutscher.  Other auction houses/galleries say Prutscher glass was probably executed by Adolf Meyr's Neffe for Bakalowits or Adolf Meyr's Neffe for Vienna Workshop.

I found another glass as well, but because I thought you had questioned OP I didn't post it.
I'll have a look round and see if I can find it again  :)

I saw a collection of glasses just like these in an exhibition on Art Nouveau and Art Deco in the V&A in London a few years ago.... but I can't remember who made them, sorry.
I thought they looked very Rennie Mackintosh at the time.

This URL will show you the glass I found.  You'll have to copy and paste because I don't know how to add a working link.

It seems you don't have to copy and paste.  You just click.  I didn't know just posting a URL would do that.

I don't know that I thought it wasn't OP.  Although I admit the subject line I gave the posting certainly says that.  It was not a good choice.  The stem of the glass certainly indicated OP and the paneling under the bowl is elegant but the design on the bowl itself did not match what I was seeing when looking at OP photos although the cut squares suggested it.  I was seaching for a glass exactly like this one and it took me a long time to find it.  In the mean time, I was being cautious (maybe over cautious).  Maybe in my original posting, instead of asking if anyone knew of a manufacturer working in the style of OP, I should have just asked "Is this OP".  I bought the glass in a small rural mall.  A half dozen dealers had set up in an old school house.  The glass was mixed in with other stems of no interest.  I couldn't imagine finding a Prutscher glass at that mall.  Of course, she did mention the soldier bringing it back from Germany.
