Title: signature on vase? - ID = Skookum (Robert Held) Canada
Post by: isleofwight collector on July 07, 2010, 08:12:30 PM
Hi - I bought this lovely vase about 5 years ago @ a car boot, it has always been one of my favorites but I'm unsure of the maker & age.

I have tried to include 2 close up pictures of the signature, it is signed to the side of the vase rather than underneath.
It has a beautiful irridescent shine with white feathering and almost petrol blue stipes.

I think the signature is something like Skodkini or Skodkim??

Skookum -- now known as Robert Held Art Glass of Canada. This is the first time I've seen the old signature, so thanks for showing.

Interesting to compare with the work of Edward Clark, see here (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,27044.0.html).

Thanks both for all your help, I actually have a few other pieces of Robert Held glass but they are signed Robert Held.
Can anyone tell me what dates they used Skookum signature and when it changed to Robert Held??

Regards Carol

Robert Held mentions that he opened Skookum in 1978 at http://www.robertheld.com/company_history.html. From what's written he opened RHAG when he moved to Vancouver 26 years ago. If his writing is recent, that would make it around 1984.

If you put Skookum glass into Google you can find scraps of information about RH.

As an irrelevant aside, "skookum" means very good or very strong. It's a word taken from a first nation language and is still in general use here.

And thanks, Anita, you finally revealed for me the meaning of the 'RHAG" stamped on a perfume bottle my mother had. To think how close I live to the Robert Held Studio.

An excellent thing to do when visiting Vancouver. Wonder of the studio is on Granvile Island?

PS:  Is this for those down under?  :usd:  :24:

Carolyn:

Close to Granville Island but not quite. About 1/3 a mile away on Pine Street, if you know the area.

HI, looked at the link that was posted by txsilver on RHAG. Was struck by the similarities with their glass and isle of wight glass, which is not a bad thing because I absolutely love isle of wight glass. :) Henry

Henry:

Interesting connection as Robert Held played about the same role in the development of the studio glass movement in Canada as Michael Harris did in Britain. Sometimes that is lost as he does a fair bit of production work to keep glass workers and himself afloat.
