Title: "Black" Sowerby 2552 butterfly candle holder

I didn't know Sowerby made this in "black" : ???: :o  Has anyone seen a complete trinket set in this colourway?  I can't begin to imagine what one would look like.  I do have a couple of sets in different colours, but this is a first for me.

Are you sure it's not been painted or sprayed on Anne? It looks wrong to me - what's it like held up to the light?

A complete 2552 trinket set in black would obviously be useless as the pattern on both trays (brush and pin) is on the bottom.  This must have been an experiment, possibly even without the knowledge of the management!  It would be very easily done if a shop making black plinths was next to one making normal candlesticks.  The weights of the two articles would be roughly the same (important for the size of the clay "nose" or "moil" on the end of the gathering iron).  The plinth gatherer could easily pop one or two gathers into the candlestick mould by mutual agreement between the shops.  Just why do this, goodness knows! Perhaps too much beer (official after 1100 am).

Adam, that's an interesting observation, thank you. It hadn't occurred to me that the pattern wouldn't show up on the black trays! I was thinking perhaps it'd been a non-catalogue item for a customer... but your suggestion makes more sense. :)

It didn't occur to me either about the pattern not being seen on the trays.

I love the idea it might have been made after too much beer ;D.  Newcastle Brown Ale I would hope :cheers:
