I have had this for a number of years and have never been able to identify it. The ground is a translucent opalescent glass with a kind of dark pink spatter covering the bulk of the body. It is definitely a cabinet vase, as it measures 2.375 inches tall, 2.75 inches wide and 1 inch front to back. Very well executed with a ground and polished rim and also a polished underside to make sure it sits flat and even. Lots of age to it. Small dark flecks or imperfections in the glass that are magnified by the pics and are not really obvious in person.
Any help on this one would be great!!

Do you mean a milky white glass or one with "fire" by saying opalescent?
I can't quite make out what the pontil mark looks like - has it been neatly heat finished to leave a little round melted flat blob?
Also, what is a "cabinet vase"? One specifically designed to sit in a cabinet? (which seems like an odd idea!).
It has some features which remind me a little bit of Benny Motzfeldt's work...

Hi Sue, glass with a hint of opalescent fire as you refer to it. The pontil mark is simply a flat ground bottom. In reality the piece is likely mold blown and cut from the top. ground and polished rim, and merely ground flat and polished on the underside to make it stand up.
By cabinet vase I am referring to an example which is much too small to actually use as a vase, and were commonly stored in cabinets. Even small flowers and water would make this example quite unstable.
I would date the piece to early 20th, or late 19th century.

Drop Benny Motzfeldt as a potential, I think.
But I've got a better idea of the piece now :) - and am completely stumped. :'(

Hmmmm difficult one. I would be tempted to place it in Murano, first quarter of the 20th century - a notoriously difficult time for research. Alternatively I could see Schneider or Kralik as authors.

Definitely not Kralik..... and I have quite a bit of Italian and does not strike me as that either..... Schneider maybe.... which takes me back to my original gut feeling of French

I really know very little about Schneider - but my guts were veering that way too...

The way the decor is kind of smeared is very reminiscent of a piece I have in an opaque ground,and also some I have bought and sold.

I have to say it looked French to me! But this is not strictly evidence based, like you, mainly a hunch. (Ivo hinting towards mysterious 30's murano is a slight worry!) I hope you find a firm attribution for this piece Craig, it looks great and deserves identification....

Came across this thread looking for something else.
The finish and decor on this vase reminded me of a Murano glass pink flat fish I had. I can't find the photos right now but will search for them. In the meantime this one, which is labelled Vetri Murano, is quite similar:

Have attached mine which had a kind of scavo technique over it, but the actual glass and the way the colour is done reminded me immediately of mine underneath the scavo effect.
