Title: David Hurry - ViDa Glass Paperweights
Post by: Leni on September 17, 2006, 10:24:38 AM
Yesterday at the Paperweight Collectors Circle meeting, David Hurry came to talk to us about his memories of his time working with Paul Ysart, and also to tell us about his latest venture (with his new wife - he said they were over here on honeymoon!) ViDa Glass.

David identified several Ysart weights in which the lampwork had been made by him, and read out some personal letters written to him by Paul Ysart.  He also passed around a superb Job Reference which Paul had written for him when he left Ysart's employment, shortly before Ysart himself retired!

David also showed us a fantastic selection of the paperweights he is now making, which were for sale to members present and which it was also possible to order!

I purchased this beauty,

and also asked David to make me a Butterfly crown.  I'll post a pic of that when it arrives      :D

Just over one month from commissioning it, I have received the beautiful 'Butterfly Crown' weight from David Hurry!     http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/albums/userpics/10048/David_Hurry_Crown_Butterfly_1_of_25.jpg

I particularly asked David to make the butterfly in 'cranberry', and for this particular style of latticinio twists and ribbons, so this weight is also number 1 of 25.

I'm very pleased with it!  :D

Leni -

I don't know how I missed this the first time you posted.  Both paperweights are beautiful!  But I absolutely love the first one.  It looks like a delicate bouquet of flowers on a lace doily.  :)

Thank you, Connie   :D

I should add that David has his own website at  www.vidaglass.no  although it doesn't show any paperweights, which apparently he hasn't been doing for as long as his other glass work.

I wish him and his wife Vibece (the name ViDa is a combination of their names) every success with this venture!   :D

Hi Leni

I managed to pick up a David Hurry weight at the Woking Glass fair - same idea as your bouquet but simpler

http://i13.tinypic.com/3yozodc.jpg

Davids work is stunning !

I looked at several of his weights at the fair and they all showed a breaking of a few millefiori strands where they are folded to go down the side of the set up - can anyone suggest a reason for this?

Best regards

Derek

Hi Derek!  My first weight also has a tiny break in the latticinio strands in one place.  I pointed this out to David when I bought it, and asked why this was, and he replied, "Because they're really, really difficult to do!"

  True, Derek!

Personally, I'd think it might be something to do with having to bend the rod into quite a tight curve around the central button of glass in a paperweight, which would obviously stretch one side of the cane more than the other    :?

But what do I know?  I'll be very interested to see the technical explanation when you get an answer from David!    :D

I'm glad this thread came around again too! :D  The paperweights shared are lovely and I really appreciate seeing them.  Hopefully, one day, a David Hurry weight will be in my modest collection too.  Til then, everyone, please keep sharing.  :)

All the best .... Lily

Hi Lily

Just to echo what Leni said - they are currently retailing in the UK from around £85 - £120 sterling. Several UK dealers are currently stocking them. Treat yourself for Christmas !

Leni & Derek ....  Thanks for your suggestion and encouragement!  I have to admit, I really am not sure where to begin or exactly what to ask for.  Do I contact David himself or are there places you know of that offer his weights online (so I can see pixs)?  All three of the ones on this thread are lovely.

I have to admit, I live in a pretty paperweight-void area.  There are/have been a few here and there, but mostly I have to go elsewhere or wait for faires to come to my area.  Ebay provides me with the greatest opportunity to see what's out there and, occasionally, make a really nice purchase (quality weight & good price).:D

Well, enough said.  One of these days I hope to post my own David Hurry weight for all to see. :D

Thanks again ..... Lily

(That song keeps echoing ... "Christmas is a-coming and the .......")

Hi Lily

The two sites I spotted with weights are Bob Hall PWs at http://www.bobhallpaperweights.co.uk/ and Justglass at http://www.justglass.co.uk/. I stress that I have no connection with either !

I am sure there will be others.

Regards

Derek

Both Bob and Brian are friends of mine, but I'm sure they won't mind me saying this. (Well, I hope they won't!   ) If you want to skip the 'middle man' and the extra they add for themselves, why not contact David via his website and get a weight direct from him?

Thank you again, Derek and Leni!  I have checked out both websites and sent an inquiry to David.  I will let you know if anything works out.

The paperweights on my wish-list and my pocketbook are less and less in agreement these days, so there are longer dry spells between purchases now.:(

That tune just keeps running through my head .... Lily

Hi Lily and Leni

David Hurry has just phoned me from Norway so I hope that you can source a weight direct from him Lily - he is a really nice guy !

David phoned to try and answer the query I had on the breaks in some of the white latticino threads where the latticino rod is bent sharply.

He talked me though the making process - the latticino is picked up on the gather and then put back in the glory hole this makes the latticino rods start to sag. The weight is then brought back to the chair where the latticino rods are folded onto the gather using the Jacks (Prucillias). the weight is then reheated prior to picking up the central motif. The dome of the weight is then gathered and the weight finished in the normal way.

David is aware of the problem but not certain of the cause - most likely appears to be just one weak white thread in some of the latticino cane also white is a notoriously difficult colour to work.  David thinks that a  combination of these two factors  may be the cause.

Hope this helps.

Best regards

Derek
