Hi,
Can anybody tell me if and when Perthshire used a butterfly on the base of their weights?
thanks
-
The acid etched butterfly at the base is the company sign of the german dealer "farfalla".
Have a very nice weekend.

Thanks, I presume this means that as they purchase weights they acid mark them, is that correct? Does this not have a negative effect on the price or future value of the weight?
-
It shouldn't make a difference. Reputable dealers won't care. And buyers who know what it means shouldn't care either. As long as it's on the base - the underside. Although I do think Farfalla has a lot of gall doing it.
-
I agree.
But on the plus side, if somebody later wanted to research the item, they would know of one source to contact for possible archive information. Maybe all dealers should mark their stock in some permanent way - just like all makers ought to permantly identify their work?
-
OK...now I am totally confused...all the above holds true BUT
Today I saw a Pertshire weight (confirmed by the "p" signature cane in the base and with the typical Pertshire concentric rings of canes and with a butterfly centr cane. SO please tell me what that is!!
Kind regards
KarelM
PS: as posted elsewhere patience is not one of my firtues and as I write this I am busy searching the web for the answer ;D ;D

A butterfly cane is not the same as a "buttefly mark".
Perthshire Paperweights made several versions of weights with butterflies in the design. The one you saw may have been a PP107 weight which was made from 1989 to 1996.

A long way from complete but may help:

Great work, Frank !!!
I´ll send you some picture of Perthshire weights, I´ve sold during the last 2 years, which are not shown at the moment.
I think I have pictures of more than 50 weights, which help to fill your database.
Best wishes
Nadine
P.S. @Karelm, I think it is not a problem, when a weight has a dealers mark like the farfalla-butterfly, as it will be helpful for research in the future, but many collectors don´t like it. Probably that´s the reason, why farfalla has stopped doing this a few years ago.

Frank,
Thanks for the link, this is something I have been looking for! It is very good to be able to see the different PP patern numbers with examples! I have only looked at the PP stuff so far but am sure to look at the rest!
THANKS
