Title: old ? gin glass

Does any one know about old ? 18 th century drinking vessels?
This one is crude and is  conical and pulled up, with a base which is flattened but with a folded over rim so it can rest on a table without scratching it, due to the cracked pontil. The flecks in the glass are frit but the dark lines in the foot are where dust has accreted.
I imagine people drinking gin in taverns from a glass like this but I look forward to being put right.

Hi Ruth,

Your pics are good and show the details well.

I would call this an Ale glass rather than a Gin, as the Funnel bowl would seem to be larger than for a Gin glass - unless the whole thing is not very tall.

As far as I can see the proportions and the overall look seem to be ok for 18th century, and probably English. With a folded foot it would normally be dated to up to about 1740. However, without a knowledgeable person handling the glass to check the actual look and feel of all parts, as well as the weight, and maybe the UV fluorescence too, we should not assume a 100% attribution here.

Thanks KevH, the whole thing is about 10cm tall, it has a sweet 'ping' and I will test it with a black light when it arrives.

I think I will go for a photo tent Connie, it is very bright light here and too hot to stand around taking photos for long. If you have any tips on using it, that would be interesting.
