As you know, I am always interested in Scandinavian glass, and saw this listed. Is it Holmegaard or an Italian floor decanter?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270696391315&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123
Any information on this very much appreciated.
Thanks,
-
Its got to be Italian ,shirley . :ha:
-
Do agree with John, not Holmegaard.
-
Thanks HarderNet.dk and jp.....I did wonder.
The name's Rosie by the way, not shirley!!
-
Yes Italian, probably 1970s, they come in all sorts of shapes mostly very tall.
I auctioned this red one last November, it went for eighty quid :thud: to a buyer in Australia (their dollar is so strong at the mo ;D), packaging it safely was a logistical nightmare but it arrived in time for Christmas and the buyer was very pleased (which makes it all worthwhile).

How did you wrap that top so it didn't break? That's very impressive.

In the end I had to send the stopper and the base as two packages, it was size that was the problem not so much weight (air mail has a 90cm size limit, width+height+depth). The stopper was packed in a strong cardboard tube which was packed inside another bigger one.

That's a lovely decanter in a beautiful colour John, and scary to wrap!!
I do have one in a green colour that has a scalloped body, so that if you cut a section through the body, it would look like a flower shape.
I always thought it was Italian, then when I saw the one listed as Holmegaard, I began to wonder......
-
Is this the shape Rosie? I did have two of these in red and one in green, oh, and a few dozen assorted others, they tend to take up a lot of space. :-X
-
Shirley you missed the film reference by John, Rosie ????? ;) :)
-
Hi glassobsessed, that's exactly the shape....gosh is looks fab!! A few dozen!!! You are obsessed!! Where on earth do you keep them all??
Nigel, "Shirley you missed the film reference by John, Rosie ?????" Must be getting old, I have totally missed this, but I am happy for you to explain. :pb:
-
John, the ones you're showing are quite a different kettle of fish - they're cased and have optic effects - these are far superior to the general Empoli mould blown bottle vases in a single colour.
They look really good en masse on top of kitchen shelves.
-
Only the stoppers are cased, quite a lot of them have optic moulding, there is plenty of variation in quality though.
Is the film reference the Italian Job?
I used to keep the bottles 'everywhere', there was not much choice really..... I sold them all on ebay a few years ago, some went for pennies and many sold well. They were my first foray into selling on ebay, I don't have photos of all of them, these days I keep a better photographic record. Here are a few though:
John

Of course there are more. ::)
The stopper on the dimpled one is the same as one of the previous stoppers (seen on a similar bottle with oblong bumps too), the red one with the clear stopper is original - I have seen exactly the same red/clear combination three times.
-
Hmmmm, only the very first one is what I consider the "normal, bog-standard" mould-blown type - all the rest of those are a bit better than that, (ie. mine, ::) ) John. :P
-
They were all a bit 'rough', even the fancy green one. The second red one I posted was the best quality, I had two of them and they varied dramatically. The good one had lovely tone, clarity and was heavier, same with the stoppers. Bizarrely, my teenage nephew picked me up a another matching red stopper in a jumble sale at the time and I still have it. Anyone need a red stopper?
John
-
Umm, possibly ;D - I got a big red thing/bottle, the type with a big white streak, but it came without a stopper - currently, it's got one from a plain bottle in it, and the plain bottle sits so high up the stopper won't fit under the ceiling - but I'm sure I'm missing a red stopper.
I'm missing a green one too - but I've stuck a (non-u) pressed fish centrepiece in it.
-
I'll bung it in the post Sue, I have to admit it has a crack running all the way up but you can't see it if you turn it through ninety degrees. :D
-
Lovely set of decanters John......I still like the red one the same as mine the best though.
So Sue is sorted....she has a stopper on the way, just two questions left...
1. Are we all agreed that the eBay listing isn't Holmegaard?
2. Who is Shirley and what is the connection with all this JP?
-
Yup, not Holmegaard.
I've not a clue what jp's doing with Shirley. It probably involves copious amounts of alcohol......
Wow, thanks, John! No panic, though. Now I need to find something you need - (that I can happily part with, before you get carried away!)
