Title: Old Painted Window Glass - But How Old?
Post by: MatW on May 15, 2014, 09:38:24 AM
Hi again,
I have this for some years now and hope someone can tell me more about it. I bought it in Northern Germany, so likely it comes from there. I think it is a fragment of a round window glass, and at its longest side it measures 9.5 cm. The glass itself has a lightly green colour which can not be seen on the photo. The painting is on the obverse side, only the grayish blue colour of the angel's wings is applied on the reverse. Can anyone tell me more about this and how old it is?
Thank you,
Mat

That is a difficult question, and I doubt there are many people who can give you an answer. It looks like a panel from a stained glass window done in folk art style - it is not a professional at work. Check "stained glass"on google images.  I guess the best positioned to answer your question are stained glass restorers like http://www.glaskunst-frankfurt.de/ - they would recognise the style at once.  You can also ask http://www.classicglassstudio.com/restoration-stained-glass.html

and please let us know the outcome :-)

Hello again, I wrote to some glass restaurators and also to a museum and got some quite controversial answers. Of course no one wanted to give a certain date because they saw the piece only in photos. The most likely answer (in my opinion) came from the "Deutsches Glasmuseum Linnich", which is specialised in stained window glass. They think it is possible that this is a so called "Bierfensterscheibe". These "beer window glasses" were given in 17Th and 18Th century on occasion of a wedding or the completion of a new house in Northern Germany, and people drank a lot of beer at that occasion  ;). They were then inserted in bigger windows. Themes were either coats of arms, biblical or everyday scenes. If I find out more, I will write again...
