Title: Dino Martens 1950's fish? No. Possible Salviati?

I have bought this 12" tall fish and I wondered if it might be by Dino Martens for Aureliano Toso. The base has had its pontil mark ground out, and it is a lovely blue.

It is of a much higher quality than the usual Italian fish.

On the Great Glass site, in the Italian (others) photo library, at the bottom of the Aureliano Toso pictures, there is a similar styled fish.

It is unusual with clean lines and very striking plain colours, with no gold anywhere.

The finish to the base is also very good, with the pontil mark being ground out, in the same way the glass produced by Whitefriars or Webbs is.

Do you think its just generic "Murano" or not, seeing as it is so plain?

On your fish sculpture, I really do not think it is a Dino Martens piece. I looked over by book and saw that all the fish shapes he did were more intricate. Their shapes were also more natural and they looked a bit plump. Yours is the oposite, being very stramlined and thin.
I have seen the fish before, but never with any labels, so I would hesitate in calling it by a specific makers name. Hope this helps a little. If anyone has documentation of a label on this type of fish, it would be great if it was posted!

Might it be by a British maker copying the style?

The blue in the base is not like the usual Murano colour I have seen, but that may just be because I don't normally look at the fish, as I am not a big fan of them (or the birds either :oops:) But I have to say I do quite like this one.

These two have labels - but 'Venetian glass made in Murano' and 'Made in Italy Murano Venezia' say very little - these are known as generic imports and they have been doing them since the 60s - what you need is a factory name or a label attribution that is solid - also really good makers signed on the base - all the Carlo Moretti, Nason, Venini I buy old & new is labelled and signed (I am not saying that is always the case - just with me)
