I went in today to check some colours and found, to my disgust, that all the glass has been taken off display and locked up in the basement again.

There are some old clothes there instead. >:(
They're going to be "refurbishing" and buliding a cafe. The glass might get to see the light of day again, in 1021.
If anybody wants to see any of the glass in the meantime, you will have to contact them to make an appointment with the museum and ask for the things you want to see to be brought out specially for you.

Wow! 1021? They are going back to the Middle Ages? I will have to borrow Doctor Who's Tardis next time I think about visiting. ;D

But a time machine is still required unless you make a specific appointment.
I wanted to check the different colours of Stuart Strathearn Dark Crystal.
There is an image of the catalogue photo on Scotland's Glass, but it's impossible to make the colours out.

It's the one annoying thing about museums - ours in Cardiff has the most amazing collection of various items - yet half never see the light - all going interactive - so boring !

UK museums should take a leaf out of their continental colleagues books, a couple of weeks ago I was on a Holland glass trip and knowing both the past and present curators of the glass collection in the Gemeente Museum in the Hague I called before hand to see if a visit to the vaults was possible , the current curator was busy with an exhibition but the past curator offered to come in for the day and let us have a look at anything we wanted to , hands on , everything from 12th century Islamic glass to Venetian and Facon de Venice and a whole herd of magnificent engraved and stippled glasses, many hours of drooling and chat.

Perth has been very helpful in the past, but it did take about 4 visits of special appointments to see the stuff that was locked up, as only about 18 pieces could be seen on one visit. But we were given a lovely big conference room with a huge table and white cotton gloves and Fiona stayed with us and talked to us about it. Sadly, her speciality was the silver collection, not the glass.
Much better than the V&A, in London when we had a special appointment there, only one piece of Monart was produced in a pokey little modern office up and along miles of corridors.

I was actually in the wrong museum for the colours I wanted to check. :-[
I should have been in Birmingham as that is the only place with a display of Stuart Strathearn Dark Crystal.
I'd found a blue bit. Normally, you only ever see red or the odd bit of white. A bit of hunting and querying around turned up others who knew of the odd bit of blue. (3)
We are wondering if green was actually ever produced, the photo in the catalogue isn't good and doesn't appear to be green to the eye.

'On January 11, 2015, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague closed for reconstruction.
The museum’s reopening is planned for 2017.' (Closed until November)
So even with family in tow, I wasn't able to sneak off and see anything.
Still saw some amazing glass though, just in much smaller collections.
It's vastly irritating that one can see millions upon millions of pieces of china in various museums and never catch sight of much glass though. And seeing it online is just not the same.

I even manage to miss seeing the the glass of the cabinets. ;D
I get so intent on trying to see what's inside, my forehead is permanently covered in lumps. ::)

Sue, where in Brum is the display ? included 'Impressions' and 'Dark Crystal' pictures. ;D

oh yes, I've done that as well, especially when I'm crouching down trying to see what the pontil mark looks like through the bottom of the glass shelf ;D - very embarrassing
The catalogue picture for the Dark Crystal is poor isn't it? It looks a bit like a teal green colour to me.

I'm afraid I don't know where it is, Keith. It's all hearsay. :)
You have the red and the white there, the ones we do know about.
This is the blue bit I found.
It does appear to be that Dark Crystal was only made in '86. I'll check on that though.

I think you and I would make a strange pair in museums together, M.
Lumpy foreheads and dusty, bruised knees as we crawl around on the floor trying to see things properly from appropriate angles before we get carted off for going behind something we shouldn't have in complete innocence. ;D

Your not on your own I do the same thing in museums, worse at art galleries I always stick my nose up to the canvas to look at the brush strokes, great blue piece, never seen one of those ! ;D

It has a fair few manufacturing flaws. I was actually surprised that it wasn't somehow marked as a second, but it came with the original box.
Even the base is not completely flat, but has an angle on it on one side.
I did wonder if it was a difficult colour to get to work properly, which might be the reason for the paucity of pieces?
I do sometimes get into trouble with paintings close up, if I try to point something out to M.
The guards are always worried I might accidentally touch it and descend upon me.
But if it's a tiny painting, and there are electrified ropes around it to keep you 6 feet away, it is very frustrating.
Scotland's glass website seems to be down at the moment, for checking the dates. :'(

Hi Sue & all,
Long time away..... but I also noticed a few days ago that Scotlands glass is down, now Ysart glass is too :'( (argghh.... much info on there not in the book) and so seem to be the rest of Frank's associated sites. Does anyone know why / if it's temporary ?
