Thanks Emmi - as I thought. I dunno why this should be the case but recently it seems that there are a growing number of spurious attributions and identifications based on nothing more than vague similarities and/or eBay listings - I think this is a very worrying trend.

However, a couple of observations, beginning with the fact that many people do not look carefully at the item they have and the one they're comparing it to. This is particularly true with a goodly proportion of eBay sellers. Most probably this is because is easier to say it's something that you hope the item to be than do the work and find and accurate comparison. (BTW, just to make things clear this is not directed at you Kieran :) ).

When I look at your vase Kieran, I notice the sloping curved shoulder and similarly a curving section to the base. The latter could be linked to Caithness, since it is a trait of some of the early pieces designed by Domhnall O'Broin, however I don't believe this to be a clue to the actual attribution, since there are some other vases that also have this characteristic - to date nobody can give them good attribution, although I have seen one with Leerdam markings, which I cannot confirm and find questionable. As for the angular vase that is on the wannabeeblog, it is just that, far more angular than your vase, with straight sections in place of the aforementioned curves.

Always be very critical of the differences when trying to make an attribution, otherwise you can fall into that eBay trap of wishful thinking :huh: ;) :huh:
