Title: Etchmark help:
Post by: Jay on April 11, 2008, 09:41:59 AM
Can anybody tip me off about this etchmark on a (quite undistinguished) round cut-crystal bowl?

I can see nothing in Hartmann close to this, it looks more sandblasted than etched. so latter half 20th C is probable.

Someone might recognise the bowl if not the mark.

I think it is an incompleted Dartington mark.

Complete Dartington mark here for comparison:    http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-29

I'd actually discounted this possibility because all the recorded marks seem to have a break in the outline, whereas there is clearly no break in the etch mark.

Is there a more recent mark with a continuous outline? (then it would seem more possible)

I'd say it is a Riedel mark with issues.

Ok so I've spent an hour looking...

The only mark for Riedel I can find is in your book Ivo, and it bears no resemblance to this in any way.

Please explain!

Hartmann has several marks but nothing like this, but then it is to modern for that. I had wondered due to the similarity with CG's seconds mark if it was a G with a seconds mark. Riedel used sandblasting since 1960 but would they sell seconds and a G rather then CJR? I thought they only do stems now.

Riedel varies from year to year; on principle it is CR or JR with 1, 2, 3 0r 4 strokes around it, the location indicates the year.

Ahhhh Ivo, a light bulb just came on... is this a Riedel mark?    http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-2914

yes it is 100%.

However I can't see how it could be related to my picture!

I can't see any of these letters nor any part of this mark as a possibility, but perhaps I'm just not seeing the correct 'overlay'?! (reflection/rotation, etc).

Here's a pic of the complete object!

Ivo thank you! That's another one nailed. :)

Jay, sorry for hijacking your topic, but it helps to rule out Riedel as well as Dartington. We might find yours by a process of elimination! ;D
