Title: Question about a French Glass Company "Julien"

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone can enlighten me about the company that marks its pieces 'Julien France'?

I've googled, mamma'd, and all I can seem to find are a couple of closed ebay auctions and a listing or two at Rago auctions for opalescent pieces - no info regarding the company or it's status (closed? open?).

Julien appears on a few moulded opalescent glass pieces. From the look and feel of them I'd guess they were made at Choisy-le-Roi. Date would be about 1930-50. Julien is probably a designer or retailer's mark.

Thanks, Steven! My husband called this morning telling me that he'd purchased a large bowl that was signed with that mark, and I thought I'd try and find out a bit about the company. I appreciate having the additional information, again, thanks!

It looks as though the Choisy-le-Roi company is very similar to America's 'U.S. Glass' company - what was once a bunch of small glass companies joined in 1891 to become U.S. Glass, which then produced tons of different patterns for different distributors.  Am I on the right track?

Now to find out if "Julien" was a department store, gift shop, boutique, or what....

Ivo Haanstra's book, Millers Glass fact file A-Z gives Julien as "trade name for pressed glass made in France c.1930".  He doesn't say who made it though.  :-\

I wasn't able to find any pieces online or in my few art glass books that had this "fruit basket" type pattern, so I thought it may help someone in the future. This bowl is 14" long, 10.5" wide, 2.25" tall - stands on 4 little peg feet. I love it, lol, but it's destined for the auction block. I will enjoy it for a little while longer first. :)

Nice Bowl, I have a vase which is signed Julien France on the base, in the last 4 years I  have only seen about 2 pieces one was a large bowl and a vase which I bought a couple of years ago and still have, my vase does not look a true opalescense, , this vase stands 12.5" tall and weighs 1.7 kgs

Roy, your vase appears to confirm the Choisy-le-Roi/ Sevres attribution as it is a pattern I've also seen with the Etling mark. The opalescence is also very similar to my Etling peacock vase. A number of the Etling patterns also appear with different marks; I have a wine coaster signed 'Cesari' which appears identical to Etling examples.

Roy, that is a stunning piece of glass - love the art deco lines, and the look to me is more of a matte opalescence, really beautiful.

I've spent a lot of time the last few years studying mainly American glass, wish there were more hours in the day so I could devote more time to that beautiful European stuff. If only I'd started earlier in life, lol.

I sure appreciate the input from you all on this Board, I'd be lost without it!

Hi all

I appreciate that this thread is a little old, but I was wondering if anyone had any more information regarding julien.  I have recently acquired a vase marked julien france.  its quite a stunning piece in my opinion, and I would love to know more about it, particularly the possible value of a such a piece.

Again, this is definitely another pattern which also turns up with an 'Etling' mark. I had a clear frosted example which had the typical moulded Etling France marks. This pattern then was very likely made at Choisy-le-Roi. As to why they are marked 'Julien', I can't say. I suspect Julien were another retailer or maybe was an alternative brand name these patterns were sold under after Etling ceased trading.

Thanks that's a help.  Would I be right in thinking that this piece would be from 1930s?
