Title: Riihimäki Vase
Post by: Pinkspoons on March 27, 2007, 09:34:22 AM
Just wondering if anyone knew the designer / approximate year of design for the vase below? I'm sure that it's been mentioned before, but the site's search option seems to be down at the moment.

VASE (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b108/pinkspoons/riihimaki-vase.jpg)

Thanks in advance.  :)

It is - but I can't find the thread I was thinking of. Doh.  :(

Of course, it could be entirely likely that I made the thread up in my head. Sillier things have been known!

Sorry I can't help Nic - it's not a shape I've had so I haven't got any old sales records to refer to.  I'll keep my eyes open though just in case I see one somewhere.

Tamara Aladin me thinks! around 76 part of the export collection.

Thanks.  :) That was going to be my guess too.

Is it actually part of the Export Collection, or is it speculation?

Thanks for that - have spotted a taller, greener verson of my vase, but beyond saying that it's an Aladin design it does doesn't give any further informaton.

The site is definitely going in my bookmarks, though.  :)

Hi Nic, I would have said Aladin from 1976 but I've not actually seen one this exact shape ever being attributed to her. I've got the taller one that's documented in the books - Palo, have you ever actually seen this smaller one attributed anywhere to Tamara Aladin - or is it a guess?

Well I have seen it attributed to Tamara Aladin, but can't find my source and I think - only think - it was described as Lantern vase for export.  Emmi

Yes I have seen them attributed to Aladin, but cannot put my finger on the source at the mo.
The one's I have come across in this shape and size have been in the green, blue and amber.

The Export Collection is the common vases we all come across in the charity shops, junk shops or car boot fairs/sales.
These pieces use to adorn the shelf's of Boots the Chemist or Woolworths.

I only ever seem to stumble across Riihimäen vases in red - I only have 2 that aren't (out of a collection of approx. 15 vases).

I'm not complaining, though - red's their best colour.  ;D

Nic,

I've compared my tall one & small one - they are basically exactly the same dimensions & profile, i.e. if you lopped c. 3" from the tall one, you would have the small one. So it would suggest that if the tall one is Tamara Aladin, then the small one would be too.

With that designlasi website you get more info if you register, but there's no reference given for their attribution for the tall vase.

Andy McConnell does say that there are a few designs which don't appear in any Riihimäki catalogue & also that some designs are unillustrated in any catalogue.

I'd love to see this 1976 export catalogue. It's been mentioned so many times  :)
