This is rather pretty really, it is aqua glass, about 9 ins long including the handles, and I assume it is a rolling pin? But the main part is rippled, so I wouldn't think anything would be very smooth, so probably just for display? Or what is it?
again, when and who would be very useful.

thanks for the third time ... 8)

I'm assuming there isn't, but is there a hole at the nipple tip?
-
Nope, round and smooth. And obviously designed for a bung of some sort at the other end.
-
At first look, I thought if there were a hole in the nipple-tip, it might be a kind of funnel.
-
I think it was Leni who pointed out that glass rolling pins are viable items, so they could be filled with cold water.
Just a blokes perspective
-
yup, or ice, for keeping your pastry nice and cool.
But why would you want a rippled surface to your pastry??
-
I'm not sure it's a rolling pin. If it were, it would have two equal-size handles on either end of the large middle portion, wether or not the middle section was fillable or not. I think it might be something more exotic. Hmmm.
-
Lynne, I don't think it's a rolling pin, but I can't think what it could be. :?
-
Some kind of early boot warmer? :?: I've never seen anything like it.

could be a pushme-pullyou....
it's very odd. I'm sure someone will be along some time to say, oh yes, I had one of those but the bung fell out...."
-
Perhaps it once had a stand and was used for some kind of chemistry experiment (corrr). The nipple bit holding the excess sediment?
-
hmmmm that's a possibility. You wouldn't have a bung in it though ...
what about an elegant Molokov cocktail holder?
-
Maybe it IS a rolling-pin and the shape is to stop it sticking to the pastry. Less surface adhesion?
-
At a recent home decor/kitchen ware homeparty I saw a rolling pin with a pattern all over it, so it could be one, but I'm a little confused because the two ends are so different. :? :?
Carolyn
-
One end is stoppered to allow it to be filled with water. No point in having two open ends.
-
Not unless you want to use it as a telescope...
I see no chips!
paraphrase of Nelson when he was late for his dinner...
-
I can't pass this one up!!!!! Here's my "stab at it" ...... a wine bottle (albeit a rather small one) for the beach. The nipple would give it more stability when you stuck the bottle in the sand. Speaking of wine ... my glass is running low. This piece gave me a good
Thanks and I hope you find out what it really is ..... Lily

The more I look at this item, the more I'm convinced it's not a rolling pin. I think it might be an automobile vase.
In the glory days of motoring before WWII - especially in Pierce Arrow automobiles and the classic Rolls Royce models, cars had vases that sat in special holders inside the "carriage" of the vehicle. Usually, the glass vase was placed in some sort of holder that was attached to the interior frame. The holder could be brass or highly polished wood. A flower or two or three were placed in the vase in water. Every vase I've ever seen in a Pierce-Arrow has a narrow, nipple bottom.
-
The vase from my Rolls is missing .... I never knew exactly what it looked like. Maybe this is it!!! The color, style, and narrow neck lead me to believe it is more likely to be a bottle (with a missing cork). As to exactly what for, I haven't the foggiest. Ahhh, the mysteries of life.
Still thinking  .... Lily

No, I've seen one of those, and they look like the vases from an eperge... nothing as crude as this one. This is much too thick a glass.
Odd thingy.
-
Modern glass rolling pins are stoppered both ends.
Also they do not really have handles, the ends do narrow but just sufficient to accomodate the plastic stoppers.

What's your guess then Frank?
-
Too bad we're not in super spy agency territory regarding technology and the Internet, yet. It would be great if one day we could scan an image and then process that image into "digital bits." Then we could code the bits and run our coded "image" through what's available on the Internet to see what matches. Some day, perhaps. Calling James Bond's Q.
As for the item not being an automobie carriage case, well, that could or could not be, but not all automobile carriage vases looked alike. Not all were clear glass; some were red, blue, green, amber, etc. I'm still not convinced it isn't an auto vase.
And perhaps it is a vase of some sort that did sit inside some sort of holder - something Victorian. I am pretty sure it's not a rolling pin.
-
The other thing that comes to mind is a round bottomed soda bottle, with an extention for some esoteric reason....
But the glass doesn;t look old enough.
-
Gotta love a mystery.
-
What's your guess then Frank?
Very tacky, hence not mentioned... but as you ask, condom or dildo was the impression I got - but not really seriously.
-
Well, it certainly strikes me as a bit dangerous for a dildo!! 8)
but maybe they could use it for checking condoms for little holes? You could put a fluorescent light stick in the open end, and pop the rubberware on the main bit.....
-
Frank, did you really write that?
-
Frank, did you really write that?
Well, he DOES live in Amsterdam....
-
 No. Way.
Not even filled with warm water to take off the chill
NO. ****IN'. WAY.
-
oh go on Leni....
Shall I send it to you on trial?????
-
We's headin' fo' the cafe!
-
we COULD stay here if only someone knew what on earth this was....

I'm not doing well with this last lot of mysteries....
-
Okay, if it's not an automobile vase, and it is medical or biological, how about staying within the realm of Frank's comment.
Fill the item with hot water. Insert the nipple end in the correct spot, and, um, hemorrhoids shrink from the heat, thus providing relief from the pain.
Or, for the ladies, insert the nipple in the proper place and the hot or warm water soothes and benefits during, well..., you know.
Frank probably gets the best weed, too.

For those of you with a broad mind:
While searching for more information on Pyrex (borosilicate glass) I came across the following thread on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borosilicate
Now... if you look at the bottom, there's a link called 'other novelties' I thought it would show some friggers
Hmm, surprising what borosilicate glass was used for - wonder which glass company made them though!
-
Mostly in small studios, they are a good source of income for many glassmakers.
-
Oh my giddy aunt! I've purposely avoided joining in this debate for fear of dragging the conversation down to gutter levels - I needn't have worried! One can imagine the embarrassment suffered by the inhabitants of Dildo in Canada when giving their address out for a pizza delivery - and I was concerned about possibly moving to Crapstone
-
Oh Pip! Every board I go on ends up dipping down the scale ,,, must be something about me. All I asked was who and when....
But I've just measured the circumference of this bitty, and it's about 9 inches. So I AIN'T going in that direction, that's a dead certainty....
-
All I can say is "you learn something new everyday" :o
I'm not sure I will put this knowledge down as something I am grateful for at the church Thanksgiving dinner this evening (even Unitarian churches have limits
Now I will have to go onto Mapquest and find out just where Dildo is in this fair land
Boy these emoticons are fun. :P

I thought we Unitarians were supposed to be broadminded..... but I suppose there's broadminded and broad minded! Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!
:D
-
it does remind me of the story of the woman working in a condom factory for 20 years thinking she produced air mattresses for mice...
-
Tssskkkk! Any more of this and this thread will be cafe'd!
-
Hmm, I did say it brought it to mind but I did not really think it was. But it seems to have stirred things up a bit
Anyway, the open end is clearly fashioned bottle top style so stoppered use is very likely - it could have been an oil lamp intended to be mounted on a pole with a hole in the end.
-
I seem to remember that the ill fated Isle of Man Glass came unstuck with a mail order promotion through Playboy magazine. I think that they overestimated demand.... :D
-
I found a terrific bottle site and thought I would be sure to find the answer to Lynne's mystery here, but no... even this site (http://www.blm.gov/historic_bottles/index.htm) doesn't have it... but it's well worth a visit regardless!
-
Well, my first thought when I saw the object was that it could be an old "former" or "tester" for condoms. And that was before the discussion got into dildos!
As for it possibly being a dildo - no way. As sated in the Wikepedia info that was linked to, glass dildos are solid (unless somebody knows otherwise). There is presumably some degree of Health & Safety governing their construction.
I like wrightoutlook's thought of it being some form of automobile flower holder (or something similar). But in truth, I don't know - I've never seen another quite like this.

You people are so rude. :D
A couple of G-rated (but highly unlikely and not really serious) suggestions:
- A wine bottle with a woven basket holder--and it's really rough wine and the peak is to catch the sediment (as per Tigerchips' chemistry set suggestion).
- maybe it had a rubber handle on one end which acted as a bung and a grip, and on the other end which just acted as a grip?
- a wonton wrapper roller, and you use the rounded end to make the holes in steamed buns ready for filling.
Just thinking laterally :)
-
I think this really is only suited to the cafe now....
I like the idea of the wonton filler, but Gosh! what large wontons you have, Grandma!!
I am thinking I might send the picture to the Glass Bottle people (I agree Anne, it is an excellent site, I use it all the time. The lip is right for a soda bottle of some kind, and if it didn't have the sticky-out bit at the bottom.....) and report back if they have any kind of practical, sensible (PIMPROFL hahahahahahahahahahaha) suggestion.
-
Well after Ivo's picture, I'm voting for a important part of a condom making machine

 Before I even get started, I have to preface this with ..... I am only stating the facts. One is short, fat, and wrinkled; the other long, thin, and smooth. IMHO SFW would be difficult to handle as a rolling pin over LTS. Another issue, why would a rolling pin have wrinkles in the first place?????
Enough said for now .... Lily

This has matching ends though, as a rolling pin should have.
