Title: Orrefors numbering and signature codes
Post by: lambden on February 07, 2006, 05:54:51 PM
Hi
Can anyone tell me anything about this bowl, it is signed Orrefors and dated but I can't make the date out, I think it could be 1932 or 1922 would this be about right and who would of designed it.
Thanks

First time I looked I saw it as 1982    But I think it looks more like 1922 than 1932.  I admit I have no idea which is more likely, 1982 or 1922!

Normally, Orrefors did not sign complete dates. I looked at the work 1922
which is an engraved work by Nils Landberg.

1982 is an cut crystal bowl with a foot designed by Edvin Öhrström whose work was signed FA. I would opt for this designation. Catalog from 1939

Hi

Nice piece - it does look like FA 1982 :?:

Bill, while you are here, and rather than start another thread can you look at these pieces -

A) I sold one (for an excellent price some years ago) and kept the other which is marked the same.

A) (http://img282.imageshack.us/img282/7231/orrifc7ff.th.jpg) (http://img282.imageshack.us/my.php?image=orrifc7ff.jpg)

The hand engraving is deep and of amazing quality and design, I can't get a maker (IG?) or date for this one.

B) I have a few like these of varying sizes, rounded with faceted sides

B) (http://img284.imageshack.us/img284/1750/orreforsc12ar.th.jpg) (http://img284.imageshack.us/my.php?image=orreforsc12ar.jpg)

Thanks

Let me start with A and come back to B later.

A is a form designed by Sven Palmqvist in 1960. The form is crystal,
and copper wheel engraved in a technique the Swedes call in English
flower cutting.

The H on the form is quite new to me. I have looked for an engraver using this monogram and can find none.

One automatically thinks of Hald but I have never seen Orrefors work
signed this way.

One possibility is that some one bought the form and then engraved it.
There were several engraving shops in Sweden. The Kjellander family
did quality work throughout the 20th century.

Hope this helps. Bill Geary

Item B.  I cannot tell if the orrefors or of can be seen at the front of the
signature. If Orrefors which I assume, this is a form designed by
Sven Palmqvist in 1944. There are six different sizes under this number.
Number 2275 which is a similar design also has 6 sizes.

Interesting enough is the SN. This is an Orrefors copper wheel engraver
Susanne Nilsson who started at the Orrefors in 1974. It is a bit unusual for the engraver signature to be included at this late date.

Hope this helps.

Hi

Very interesting posts Bill

Thanks - your knowledge always appreciated on the more tricky pieces I can't get into - you have given me lots of information to look at  :P
