New Zealand & Australia Glass / Large Urn-shaped Vase, c.1875?
« Last post by Shaun58 on January 05, 2025, 12:22:34 AM »
Anyone have any information? I think it might date to about 1875 but I don't know

It is hefty, full of swirls, clear shear mark under the foot.

Height (approx.): 13 inches

Diameter across top rim: 8 9/16 inches

Foot diameter: 61/2 inches

Weight: 5.35 Lb

Found in an op shop here in Sydney. ;)

I can't find out anything about it, but although it is not high-end, it is certainly lovely and striking!

British & Irish Glass / Re: What do you want to know about Percival Vickers?

Just to let you all know, as we enter another year, this book is still on its way. These things always take longer than expected, and perhaps that's a good thing, as I'm still finding out new information on Manchester glass almost every week, it's a big topic. I intend to have the rough draft complete in the next 2 months and then it's a case of how long it takes to "typeset" it for an Amazon self-published release. Some time in 2026 I would say, with a second book on the rest of Manchester glass loosely aiming for 2029.

Including a pic here of PV celery 182 (I do have much better photos lined up for the book, this was an early attempt to light up an engraved pattern).
There will be more cut & moulded coverage than you might expect in the book, it's not all pressed glass from Manchester, though it sometimes seems that way!

British & Irish Glass / Edward Moore pattern 416 sugar basin

This is a frosted piece where the stars were cut into the pattern.
There are a number of suites like this from pressed glass makers around the late 1860s to early 1870s, which is where I would date this.

Unfortunately that is very unlikely to be the original stopper as it sits too high in the neck. You shouldn’t be able to see the top of the plug part.

Andy McConnell calls that type of neck ‘snake-ring’.

Manganese in clear lead glass generally used as a de colorizer. According to the book THE COMPLETE CUT & ENGRAVED GLASS OF CORNING  Steubens clear lead formula post reorganization c. 1933 and beyond did not need a de colorizer. Paul V. Gardners book  THE GLASS OF FREDERICK CARTER devotes 98 pages to design shapes pre 1932 taken directly from the Carter archives, of this 7 pages are devoted to decanters and your design is unaccounted for. Pictured is a signed and dated Steuben vase lighted with a 366 long wave U.V. lamp.

It's in the shape of a ship's decanter, although it's quite small, but I can't remember seeing a decanter with the spiral around the neck, usually it's individual rings. One by Steuben is shown here:

It's difficult to tell but yours seems to have quite a lot of wear on the base, perhaps indicating it has some age. I assume the strong manganese glow is produced under 365nm. UV light, this might also indicate age. I can't identify the maker but I wonder if it might be European.

Glass / Cello Handmade Glass Paperweight.

There have been a few posts about Cello glass but I don't think with any definite conclusion. There are pieces on Ebay, most of which say it is an Italian maker but with no proof. This paperweight/ringholder? has a polished base a very faint Cello Handmade clear plastic label and interestingly an engraved mark which reads A and an L? This would seem to indicate a European maker.

Picked this up at a local thrift shop.  Google Lens brought up Steuben, but not sure if it is.  It does glow under UV, and pretty sure it contains manganese, as the stopper and decanter glow yellow.  It weighs less than a US pound; approximately 6.5 inches tall, and just under 5.5 inches across the bottom.  Looks to have a pontil mark on the bottom. There are no markings on it.  Prelim research says that not all Steubens are marked.  Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.
