Title: Philip (Arthur) Jacobs of Port Macquarie, Australia slumped & kiln formed glass
Post by: singingyamada on February 05, 2013, 10:07:42 AM
So in a little op shop at East Gosford in NSW Australia I buy this glass plate.  It has a sticker, a signature and a brilliant colour and design. The only Philip Jacobs I can find is the USA  http://www.earthandfirestudio.net/artist_statement.html. I have emailed him with pictures of the peice hoping he can identify it and give me a year and place so we can archive it here,.

I received a reply

" Lee,
The glass is not mine. My signature is not very legible.
good luck
Philip"

Another mystery started......Again

Doing a bit of lateral thinking, I wondered if this might be by Philip Jacobs the UK fabric designer? We know that designers get asked to do all sorts of things, not just what they are best known for - so it's perhaps worth an ask? http://www.flickr.com/people/philipjacobs/

Hi Lee,

Did you find an answer to your quandry? I have just picked up a similar piece in Port Macquarie with the same signature and sticker. I researched Earth & Fire and that signature is so diferent I knew it wasn't theirs. Then I found this post so am informed but in the same place as you. Who is Philip Jacobs?

Has anyone come up with more information please?

Cheers
Steve.

Here is some biographical info on Philip Jacobs, probably from a gallery tag:

   • Born 1931 in Adelaide, South Australia
   • Studied silver smithing under Ken Jiggins then going on to study print making with Klaus Zimmer at the Geelong Institute of Technology
   • Has been working on creative craft activities on a full-time basis since 1982 primarily as a coppersmith and in lead-light and stained glass work
   • By 1987 Philip turned his focus to glass as his main medium of interest and trained in the "Turkey Works" warm glass studio in Sydney under the tutorship of Judith Hancock and Deborah Cocks.
   • Has participated in workshops conducted by Pavel Tomecki and Judy Bohm Parre
   • Currently working exclusively in kiln-formed glass producing one-off pieces.

I recall seeing similar large and colourful platters for sale in a gallery in Canberra 5-6 years ago. However, that does not fix a date for the above info, because the info came from a different source and could well be older or more recent.

well the answer is found , A lady was researching him and my name popped up with the board. By email.  Philip Arthur jacobs

"My name is evelyn and I wondered if you had all your information for the wonderful artist Philip Arthur Jacobs - he was a Pharmacist in Port Macquarie and a great artist"

"Hello Evelyn I have his piece on my wall because I cant bear to part
with it. How did you know about my search for him?
Lee"

"Hi Lee

Well it is  story. Phil and Judy Jacobs lived in Port Macquarie and Phil was a Pharmacist for many years. I had a terrible surgery and Phil and Judy assisted me to recover from massive adhesions internally. I became friends with both. Phil had a surgery to his leg - veins and it went horribly wrong - he was in a wheelchair. Phil started a glass venture - beautiful pieces - I do not know how long he did this or if he was doing it before he came to Port Macquarie but people snapped up his pieces. Obviously when his health deteriorated he stopped and then he passed away. He was a beautiful quiet man. I was looking in a book he gave my Pharmacist daughter in 1994 and found his original Pharmacy Certificate, I then tried to google Judy who I had lost contact with but found your messageboard so just wondered if you had found the information you wanted. He was in Port Macquarie from at least 1992 onwards because that is when I met him. So have you got the right Philip Jacobs?

Regards Evelyn

Look in the index of some of Phil's work (I don't think this Gallery exists anymore as I live in Lake Cathie and have not heard of it)

Regards Evelyn"
