Title: Monart pin dish with badge
Post by: Gary on February 10, 2011, 10:33:58 PM: I recently purchased this Monart Y shaped pin dish with a badge inlay, which reads " 1936 PERTH ICE RINK CURLING CLUB ". There is an identical one on Frank Andrews site YSART GLASS. http://www.ysartglass.com/Ysart/YsartSpecial.htm.
The information given there is all that I know about the piece.
My assumption on this particular design that it is was commissioned by the Curling Club to commemorate an anniversary of some kind post dating 1936. The colour scheme of pastel pink, black and gold aventurine used in this piece was introduced and used extensively in Monart glass after 1947.
Any added information on this design would be most helpful.

How is the badge included in the bowl? Is it embedded in glass or is there a "pocket" of some form?

As far as I can tell, if it is embedded in glass (i.e. no "pocket") then it is set extremely well, with no air bubbles that I can see. That suggests to me the work of Paul rather than Salvador (*) and would, of course, tie in with a post-1947 Monart date.

(*) I have only seen two three weights with badges that were most likely by Salvador and all had bubbles somewhere around the badge.

Post by: Gary on February 13, 2011, 11:55:12 AM: The pin dish is a normal Monart Y shaped and size X11, the badge is set in a separate domed shaped piece of glass and attached to the centre of the dish. There is some discolouration where the two pieces of glass are attached. The domed shaped piece of glass is bubble free.

So I guess the clear domed section containing the badge was added as a subsequent, and possibly final, stage to the preformed bowl prior to cracking off and base finishing. Good workmanship to keep the clear domed bit in proper shape. And the more I think about it, I reckon the clear glass encapsulation does solidly surround the badge. Definitely very well controlled work.

Post by: Gary on October 13, 2011, 06:43:14 PM: After reading an article in the local newspaper about the history of the Perth Ice Rink, I know now it was built in 1936 by subscriptions and donations for local curling clubs and was the first indoor rink in the area. Perth Ice Rink Curling Club was formed in the same year and played their home games on it.
Still presume it was commissioned for some anniversary, possibly its 25th, which would make at the very end of Monart production (1961).
