Title: Large Art Deco Frosted Bowl, is it French?

Hi,

I have just collected my purchases today and at the bottom of a large box I found this charger which I hadn't even noticed :oops:

Its 12" across and has what looks like fern patterning on the bottom and a matt inside. I have looked and looked but can't find any marks. To me it looks French maybe Etling? or Verlys? but I thought they had a moulded mark around the rim.

What do you think?

Obviously no wear to the base of this beauty - a lampshade? I would not dare to place it anywhere else  :shock:

Hi Pamela,

There is wear to the little bits that touch the table surface, and these have worn clear rather than the matt finish.

Anne it really is lovely and huge, I don't know how I missed it!

Is it ground on the rim?

Looks to shallow for a lamp shade and the edge is wrong for fitting in a bulkhead ring.

Unusually attractive piece for its ilk too :twisted:

Hi Frank,

It doesn't look ground, it is really well finished off, and the decoration is very crisply moulded. I really like it.

If I can manage to get there, I might lug it up to Harrogate and see if I can get it id'd.

Hi Barbara, Lovely I must say. I also have a large piece of Verlys and the mark "Verlys" is scratched (for want of a better word, can't think this morning) rather than moulded.The mark follows the curve of a leaf, so carefully  tilt the piece into the light and see if you spot any scratches, this would be on the interior. I am always amazed at how some companies marked their wares, but seem to take delight in trying to hide the mark at the same time. I should also add mine is 14 inches across and the design is of three orchids, frosted with a clear background. Terry

Hi Terry,

I have looked all over the flaming thing and I cant see a mark anywhere :( .

It's made me like it more though as the moulding is so fine and crisp, its one of those that I don't have the room (or roomspace) to keep but I don't want to sell it either :?  

It's sat on the table in the consevatory at the moment looking rather sad and lost. Will have to move it soon before it gets "catted" by Lucre who will make it his new bed :evil:

It needs a large window and a plate stand to show it off to its full advantage I think.

The design is of three orchids, they are frosted while the rest remains clear. The design is on the inside and is so high in relief I cannot imagine what you could put in it to make it useful unless whole fruit. Terry

:oops: Love glass, not frantically knowledgeable BUT this is what you do with this sort of thing, unless displaying on plate hinges as already suggested. Love it by the way. :lol:

50's.  Have heavy silk, cut-chenille table cloth, with bullion fringeing, in dark green, red or brown-gold ,occasionally a french navy...all glisten with the lustre of the silk. Throw over table, permanently. PLACE platter/charger in centre. Standard lamp to side, would highlight the glister or glow in the evening. table should be placed near window, so that watery  daytime,sunlight through  lace curtains catch the dish in the day.
On special occasions cover dish with lace or paper doily on which sits mince pies or home-made shortbread. Surrounded by little, fat, etched and gold rimmed glasses, the frosting being lemon/blue or pink...for the port.
60's place charger/platter in centre of Danish teak, oiled, wood table.Frown at anyone who touches table,chairs or glassware, polished to showroom standards.ala Conran/Habitat/Heals etc.,  Ditto all else above, standard lamp though replaced by brushed stainless down lights or new, 3-legged,'woven' formed acrylic floor lamp. Usually orange with lovely glow when on, pretty awful when not on.
70's Use as cheese platter or display on wall.
after that??? they seemed to disappear from general use...being in sideboards of 'better' homes, replaced by plastic fruit gondolas inother homes.
Its beautiful..
